Women's Volleyball: With Two Wins, Warriors Extend Home Streak to Eight

Four players are honored on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Senior All-America Anna Barry (Andover) had 27 kills without an error as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in eight home matches this year with sweeps of Castleton University and Framingham State University Saturday at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.
 
Behind ten kills each from senior Nayeli Cruz Martinez (Toa Baja, P.R.) and sophomore Bella Johnson (Marlborough) Eastern (12-4, 4-1 LEC) swept Castleton (11-10, 0-4 LEC) in a Little East Conference match to remain in a three-way tie atop of the conference standings. Scores were 25-8, 25-10, 25-22.
 
Barry, the two-time LEC Player-of-the-Year, had 20 kills in 24 attempts and senior Meg Verizzi (Lebanon) had 36 assists in a non-conference sweep of Framingham State. Scores were 25-6, 25-13, 25-11.
 
In the team's sixth and seventh sweeps of the year, Barry attacked at .750 with 27 kills on 36 attempts on the afternoon while Cruz Martinez had 17 kills and a .483 attack percentage and Johnson 13 kills and a .440 attack percentage. Eastern attacked at .346 while its two opponents managed only .006.
 
Verizzi collected 52 assists on the afternoon to move to within 33 of becoming the seventh player in program history with as many as 2,000 in a career. First-year player Samantha Blandford (Windham, NH) had nine service aces, Cruz Martinez five and senior libero Paula Perez (Caguas, P.R.) four as the Warriors accumulated 29 points on service aces while allowing only five for a .925 reception percentage.
 
Perez, junior Paige Savitsky (Centereach, NY), sophomore Cassie Parmelee (East Berlin) and first-year libero Jenna Loring (Richmond, RI) combined on 54 receptions with only three total errors. Cruz Martinez and Johnson also combined on 11 blocks and Loring, Perez, Savitsky and Verizzi combined on 50 digs.
 
Prior to the Framingham State match, Eastern's four seniors and their families were recognized: Barry, Cruz Martinez, Perez and Verizzi.
