Swimming: Men & Women Open Home Schedule With Easy Wins

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's and men's swim teams each won seven of the meet's nine individual events and also captured both relays in their home-opener Saturday at the Sports Center pool.
 
The Eastern women (3-2) defeated Plymouth State University (2-1), 153-40, and Western New England University (3-2), 136-65, while Western New England defeated Plymouth State, 128-56.
 
The Eastern men (2-2) defeated Plymouth State (1-1), 135-59.
 
The Eastern men and women combined to sweep five individual events – the 100 and 200 freestyle, the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke and 400 individual medley -- and both relays.
 
For the women, juniors Kelly Schneider (Portland) and Lindsay Weaver (Newington) and sophomore Allison Ronan (Northbridge, MA) each won two events, with first-year swimmer Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN) claiming one first. Schneider swam her fastest times of the year in the 100 (1:00.04) and 200 freestyle (2:12.91), Weaver her fastest time this season in the 100 butterfly (1:02.88) and Ronan her fastest time in the 100 backstroke (1:04.38). Weaver won the 50 freestyle (27.11) and Ronan the 400 individual medley (5:14.15). Frisch was timed in 1:17.43 in the 100 breaststroke.
 
Ronan (backstroke), Frisch (breaststroke), Weaver (butterfly) and Schneider (freestyle) combined on the winning 400 medley relay (4:23.68) which kicked off the meet. Combining on the winning 400 freestyle relay (4:14.38) which closed the meet were junior Nancy Scanlon (West Hartford), sophomores Zoe Pascual (Danbury) and Jenna Morin (Waterford) and junior Nicole Sabio (Unionville).
 
For the men, junior Nathan Melia (Manchester) and sophomore Joseph Sylvester (Morris) were double winners, with junior Connor Scully (Oxford), sophomore Ben D'Addario (Fairfield) and first-year swimmer Sam Hurlburt (Meriden) each winning one event.
 
Melia won the 100 backstroke (59.76) and 200 freestyle (1:58.49) and Sylvester the 400 IM (4:55.19) and swam his fastest time in winning the 500 freestyle (5:24.48). Sophomore Connor Rego (Winsted) posted an apparent winning time of 4:39.41 in the 400 IM but was disqualified.
 
Scully was timed in 11:15.95 in winning the 1000 freestyle, D'Addario in 52.15 with his winning effort in the 100 freestyle and Hurlburt posted a season-best time of 1:05.51 in touching first in the 100 breaststroke.
 
Melia (back), Hurlburt (breast), Rego (fly) and D'Addario (free) were the winning combination on the 400 medley relay (4:23.68). Teamming to win the 400 freestyle relay were junior Jae Pinilla-O'Dea (Madison), Sylvester, first-year swimmer James Bragg-Phillips (Stratford) and Scully.
 
 The most closely contested events of the afternoon occurred when Weaver edged Plymouth's Kyra Donahue by .12 seconds to capture the 50 freestyle; Alex Wasyliko of Plymouth State nipping D'Addario by .33 seconds to win the 50 freestyle; Ronan besting Caitlin Guntly of Western New England by .38 in the 100 backstroke, and WNE's Megan Morrissey  catching Eastern sophomore Kyleigh Connolly (Cheshire) by .50 seconds in the 500 freestyle.
Eastern competes at the Connecticut Cup Dec. 2-3 at Wesleyan University.
