Softball: Offense of SanGiovanni and Woods, Bolduk and Michon's Pitching Lead Sixth-Nationally Ranked Warriors to LEC Sweep Over WestConn

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Using a 5-for-5 afternoon from graduate outfielder Cassie Woods (Mystic), a five-RBI day from senior third baseman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven), and 11 innings of shutout ball from senior pitcher Morgan Bolduk (Vernon) and sophomore pitcher Alexis Michon (Montville) who each recorded 10 strikeouts, Eastern Connecticut State University Softball cruised to a doubleheader victory at Clyde Washburne Field over Western Connecticut State University with a 3-1 victory in game one and five-inning, 8-0 win in game two.

Making her seventh start of the season, Bolduk gave up an unearned run due to two errors by the Warriors (22-4, 5-1 LEC) in the first inning before shutting down the WestConn (10-12, LEC 0-6) lineup the rest of the way en route to the 3-1 win in game one. SanGiovanni's RBI double and singles from junior second baseman Alyssa Vilchez (Brampton, ON) and Woods led to all three Eastern runs in the contest.

Michon followed up the impressive outing from Bolduk with one of her own in the right-hander's 12th start of the season. Striking out eight consecutive batters between the first and third innings after first-year third baseman Jada Miconi's groundout to lead-off the game, Michon pitched all five innings of game two giving up only two hits while striking out 10 batters. Highlight by a bases clearing double by SanGiovanni in the third inning and a towering home run by Woods in the fourth inning, the Warriors earned their doubleheader sweep with an 8-0 game two victory.

Eastern Conn. 3, Western Conn. 1

Aggressive out of the gate, WestConn saw first-year outfielder Carly Cardova reach on an error by Vilchez before a single by senior catcher Nicole Antonowicz and stolen base put runners on second and third with one out against Bolduk. After working a strikeout against first-year first baseman Amber Roggendorf, sophomore Sydney Chenoweth reached on an error by senior first baseman Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) allowing the only WestConn run to score before Maytasovsky fired home to junior catcher Carolyn Biel (Wallingford) who tagged out Antonowicz to end the inning.

SanGiovanni's double in the bottom half of the first would score Woods who reached after being hit by the first pitch of the game. Following a Michon walk, Vilchez would give Eastern their first lead of the afternoon with a single to right when a misplayed ball by first-year pitcher Sarah Milyko allowed SanGiovanni to score, making it 2-1.

Woods would tack on an insurance run to make it 3-1 in favor of the Warriors in the fourth inning with a rocketing single up the middle while just five WestConn batters were able to reach base after the first inning against Bolduk en route to the game one win. The Vernon native finished her complete game giving up one run (unearned) on four hits while striking out three and walking one.

Eastern Conn. 8, Western Conn. 0 (F/5)

Taking control right from the start, SanGiovanni continued her 2-for-5 afternoon in which she recorded two doubles and five RBIs with a sacrifice fly scoring Woods in the first inning to give Eastern a 1-0 edge early. A Chenoweth error at shortstop in the second extended the Warrior lead to two when Biel reached safely and Michon came home to score.

The big blows of the game would come in the third and fourth innings when a bases clearing double by SanGiovanni put Eastern in front 5-0 and then the very next inning on the cusp of a mercy rule victory with a two-run home run to right field by Woods. In control of the game in the fifth inning, coach Diana Pepin sent junior catcher Carley Gessaro (Middletown) to pinch hit with runners on second and third with a chance to end it. Her first at-bat of the season, Gessaro bunted the first pitch of first-year pitcher Hannah Dorley's relief appearance on a 2-1 count, scoring junior pitcher Carley Stoker (Sandy Creek, NY) from third to give the Warriors an 8-0 win in five innings.

After striking out eight consecutive batters swinging from the first to the third inning, Alexis Michon finished her five-inning complete game shutout allowing only two WestConn hitters to reach safely while striking out 10 and walking none. The Montville native is now 11-1 on the season, boasts a 1.15 ERA, and a team-leading four shutouts.

After a 0-for-3 performance in game one against Southern Maine the other week, Cassie Woods has reached base safely in the last five games for Eastern while recording multi-hit games in the last four consecutive games. With her five-RBI afternoon with two doubles, Julia SanGiovanni has tied her single-season high in doubles at 10 while surpassing her single-season high in RBIs which was previous set at 27 during her first season. SanGiovanni has recorded 29 RBIs in 26 games played this year while toting a .408 batting average which is second-best on the team.

Stealing two more bases on Tuesday afternoon, first-year outfielder Maggie Baker (Hudson, MA) has started her Eastern career going a perfect 17-for-17 swiping bases.

The Warriors travel to Castleton University this Saturday for a pivotal Little East Conference doubleheader at Spartan Field with game one scheduled to start at 1:00 PM. The Spartans currently lead the conference with a 4-0 record to start conference play with Eastern close behind at 5-1 in the Little East this season. The two teams split their two games last season at Clyde Washburne Field with the Warriors taking game one with a 4-2 win before Castleton came back with a 6-5 victory in game two.
