NORWICH, Conn. – Juniors
Ashton Lewis (Fairfield) and
Jonah Dupuis (Hampton) finished 1-2 overall as the Eastern Connecticut State University men's golf team won its eighth invitational team championship in three years, outdistancing a field of seven teams at the two-day Rose City Invitational which concluded Monday afternoon at the Norwich Golf Course.
The top six teams in the invitational were separated by only 66 points. Behind medalist Lewis (+2) and Dupuis (+3), Eastern totaled 604 strokes over the par 71 layout, edging Salem State University's 627. Albertus Magnus (649), Westfield State University (652) and Rhode Island College (653) were separated by four strokes.
Lewis led the 34-person field in Sunday's first round by shooting a 1-under 70, and Dupuis followed Monday with a tournament low of 73 over 18 holes. Sophomore
Cal Angelo (Southington) shot 73 Sunday and finished third on the team at +12, with sophomore
Chris Davidson (New Milford) at +19.
Lewis began the tournament Sunday by shooting a 2-under 34 over the first nine holes, with five birdies and a par and shot 1-over 36 on the back nine with two birdies and four pars. In leading all players on Monday with his 2-over 73, Dupuis shot 1-under 35 on the front nine with eight straight pars after birdieing the first hole and 3-over on the back nine with a birdie and four pars.
It marks the eighth invitational title since the program was re-instate in 2020-21. The Warriors won the Little East Conference Invitational in 2020-21 and followed by winning the first official LEC Championship last year. Eastern has also won its own invitational four times, the Westfield State Brett Williamson Invitational once and the Mitchell College Invitational once.
