WESTFIELD, Mass. – Eastern Connecticut State University junior
Ashton Lewis (Fairfield) shot a tournament-record 69 to earn medalist honors and lead the Warriors to +19 and the repeat team title at the Westfield State University Brett Williamson Invitational at the Tekoa Country Club Wednesday afternoon.
The team title is the ninth in the program's three-year existence and third this year. Lewis led the Warriors to the Rose City Invitational title at the Norwich Golf Course this past weekend.
The reigning Little East Conference champion, Lewis finished 2-under par for a three-stroke win over Mitchell College's Shamus McLean. Lewis shot par on 14 holes and made three birdies - on the par-5 fourth and 14
th, and on the par-4 eighth hole. His lone bogey of the day was on the par-4 fifteenth hole. In securing the win on the 231-yard par-3 eighteenth hole, he hit his tee shot just left of the green and chipped and one-putted for par to secure the low round of the day and the individual tournament title.
Sophomores
Cal Angelo (Southington) and
Chris Davidson (New Milford) and first-year player and walk-on
Nick DiNino (Glastonbury) followed Lewis for Eastern all finished among the top 22 in the 54-person, 11-team field. Angelo (+4) tied for fifth overall, Davidson (+8) tied for eighth and DiNino (+11) was 22
nd. First-year player
Jake Napolitan (Agawam, MA), another walk-on, was fifth for Eastern and tied for 27
th at +13. The Warriors won the invite without the services of junior
Jonah Dupuis (Hampton), one of the team's top two players.
Last year, Davidson topped Eastern and placed in a tie for second overall with a +5 total of 76.
Behind Lewis and McLean, NVU-Johnson's Adiance Cheromiah and New England College's Timothy Carlson finished in a tie for third at 74.
Eastern finished with a team total of 303, edging NVU-Johnson (307) and New England College (309).
Tekoa played at 6,438 yards for the par 71 course, a blended Donald Ross/Geoffrey Cornish designed course.
The Williamson tournament honors the memory of former Owls' golfer Brett Williamson '11, who captained the Owls first team when the sport was returned to varsity status in 2008, and passed away in 2017 after a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis.
Eastern competes at the Elms College Blazer Invitational this weekend before hosting the Little East Conference Championships Oct. 6-7 at Ellington Ridge Country Club. This weekend's tournament will be staged at Ledges Golf Club in South Hadley, MA Saturday and at Cold Spring Country Club in Belchertown, MA on Sunday. Start times have not yet been announced.
