WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University swim teams opened their seasons under fifth-year head coach
Sarit Gluz by winning eight of 12 events at the non-scoring University of Saint Joseph Blue Jay Pentathlon Friday night at Bruyette Natatorium.
The men, in their fourth intercollegiate season, won all five individual events as well as the relay while the women captured two firsts, two seconds, a third and a fifth.
Highlighting the night was first-year men's swimmer
Nico Iannucci (Parsippany, NJ), who broke two individual records in his first college meet. Iannucci set the record in the 50 butterfly (24.81) and 100 individual medley (57.86). He won four of the five individual events that he swam and also swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay (1:45.10). He was timed in 28.58 in winning the 50 breaststroke and 23.86 in winning the 50 freestyle. Junior
Connor Rego (Winsted) won the 50 backstroke (27.45). Joining Iannucci in the 200 medley relay were seniors
Nathan Melia (Manchester) and
Connor Scully (Oxford) and first-year swimmer
Ryan Jezek (Avon).
Eastern swimmers took the top three spots in the men's individual pentathlon, with Iannucci winning, Rego second and junior
Joseph Sylvester (Morris) third. In addition to his four wins, Iannucci was also third in the 50 backstroke (27.51) behind Rego and Sylvester.
For the women, junior
Maya Brody (East Granby) was the team's top finisher in three of five individual events and also swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:59.92). She was second in the 50 freestyle (26.73), third in the 50 butterfly (28.54) and fifth in the 100 IM (1:08.81). Sophomore
Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN) claimed the 50 breaststroke (32.56) and junior
Allison Ronan (Northbridge, MA) was second in the 50 backstroke (30.87). Joining Brody on the winning relay were Ronan, Frisch and senior
Kelly Schneider (Portland).Â
Frisch was Eastern's top finisher in the women's individual pentathlon, taking third behind Smith College swimmers Grace Magee and Caroline Kolomodin.
Eastern competes at Regis College Saturday at 11 a.m.
