NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Only hours after helping the Eastern Connecticut State University men's 4000 meter distance medley relay to a program record at the New England Open at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, senior
Ryan Escoda (Newtown) and junior
Thomas Stone (Glastonbury) won events 100 miles away at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's Winter Invitational at the Roland Field House.
Escoda won the mile (4:26.79) in a field of 20 competitors and Stone outran a field of 12 competitors in the 1000 (2:38.05) as the men finished third in a field of five teams with 63 1/2 points.
On the women's side, senior
Wendie Stewart (Hartford) won the shot put (38-9 3/4/11.83m) in a field of 17 and senior
Daniela Morales (West Haven) was third in the weight throw (42-10/13.05m) among 17 participants in the women's fourth-place finish among five competing institutions with 36 points.
Host Coast Guard captured both team titles, the women overwhelming the field with 172 points and the men totalling 95 1/2 points, nearly 30 points more than Westfield State University.
Other top performers for the men were senior
Cory Bill (Mansfield), junior
Conor Hennessy (Granby), sophomore
Eric Phongsa (Pomfret) and first-year runner
Sam Klein (Shelton). Bill, Hennessy and Phongsa all posted seconds and Klein was third. Bill was timed in 23.82 and Klein in 23.98 in the 200, Phongsa 6.74 in the 55 and Hennessy recorded a long jump of 20-8 (6.30m).
In addition to winning the shot, Stewart was fourth among 17 athletes in the weight throw (41-8/12.70m).
Eastern returns to action Friday and Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
