Men's Lacrosse: Hot in Third Quarter, Warriors Go Cold in Fourth in Loss

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team scored six goals in a span of 12 minutes midway through the game to move to within a goal, but managed only one goal over the final 22 minutes in a 15-10 non-conference loss to Lasell University Tuesday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park.

Eastern (2-2) closed out the first half with a pair of goals 34 seconds apart, then scored twice in a span of 16 seconds to open the second half as part of a 6-1 run, but went cold the rest of the way. Lasell (2-4) withstood the Warriors second-half thrust, outscoring them 5-1 in the fourth quarter.

In a game which featured a combined 49 turnovers in the game, the Lasers outshot the Warriors, 45-29, picked up 52 ground balls, and capitalized on four of seven extra-man situations.

Patrick Mullhern scored twice early in the second quarter, his second one coming up on a man-up opportunity that helped Lasell balloon its lead to six, 9-3 with five minutes left in the first half.

After gaining a measure of momentum with its two late first-half goals that made it a four-goal halftime deficit, Eastern carried it over to the second half in eventually cutting the gap to one. Sophomore Brycen Kennedy (Southington) scored off junior Scott Galbo's (East Lyme) faceoff win to open the second half, and first-year player Warren Channing (Glastonbury), who assisted on Kennedy's goal, scored on Galbo's ensuing faceoff win that made it 9-7 less than a minute into the quarter.

Kennedy's team-leading 14th goal of the season midway though third quarter made it a one-goal (10-9) game, but the Lasers re-gained their edge with a decisive three-goal run that opened the fourth quarter.

An Eastern faceoff violation gave Lasell first possession in the fourth quarter and the Lasers made the Warriors pay when Landon Reyes scored an unassisted goal just 24 seconds into the quarter that made it 11-9.

Kennedy (4-1) and Channing (3-2) led Eastern offensively with five points, with Galbo winning ten of 21 faceoffs and sophomore Rick O'Neal (East Hartford) going 4-of-7 from the faceoff X. Senior goalie Nick Collazo (Park Ridge, NJ) stopped 11 shots, five in the third quarter when he gave up only one goal that had the Warriors trailing by a single goal entering the final 15 minutes. Senior Ryan Stocks (Longmeadow, MA) picked up a team-high four ground balls.

Reyes and Mullhern each had four goal for Lasell, Reyes and Nate Taggart each dishing off three assists. Michael Catalano made nine saves in net while Matthew Carbone gave his team a huge lift by winning six of seven faceoffs in the fourth quarter.

Eastern faces Farmingdale State College Thursday at noon at Davenport.
