ELLINGTON, Conn. – Junior
Ashton Lewis (Fairfield) won medalist honors for the sixth time this year, earning the top individual spot with an eight-stroke victory over runner-up Ethan Doyle of Salem State University in leading the Warriors to their sixth championship this season at their own spring invitational Thursday afternoon at Ellington Ridge Country Club.
As a team, Eastern put its top four finishers ahead of Salem's No. 2 golfer in winning its second spring invitational after capturing four titles in the fall, including the Little East Conference Championship at the same par-72, 6,936-yard Ellington course. Last weekend, Eastern opened its spring season by winning the Rhode Island College Invitational at the Valley Country Club in Warwick, RI behind Eastern medalist
Cal Angelo (Southington), a sophomore.
Lewis, last fall's Little East individual champion, was the only one of 30 golfers to break 80, shooting a 1-over 73 in leading the Warriors to a 16-stroke win in the six-team field over Salem State, which also finished second to Eastern at the Warriors' Rose City Invitational last fall. Lewis, Angelo (10-over 82), first-semester sophomore transferÂ
Matthew Orefice (Niantic) (11-over 83) and senior
Andrew Gromko (Canterbury) (12-over 84) also finished ahead of Salem's No. 2 golfer, Ryan O'Leary (13-over 85). Senior
Billy Beaver (Danbury) rounded out Eastern's finishers, shooting a 28-over 100.
Lewis shot an even-par 36Â over the front nine and was 2-under after birdieing No. 11 and 13. After double-bogeying No. 14 and bogeying No. 15, he rallied to par the final three holes. Over 18Â Â holes, Lewis posted three birdies, 12 pars, two bogies and one double bogie. In winning his third straight LEC title last fall, Lewis shot 1-over 145 over 36 holes in the two-day tournament on this course.
Angelo, Orefice, Gromko finished three strokes apart. Angelo was 5-over on both the front and back nine. Orefice was 4-over after nine holes. Gromko finished strong with a 2-over over the final five holes of the back nine.
Gromko and Beaver were recognized before the match on Senior Day.
Eastern closes out the regular season a week from Sunday at the Roger Williams University Invitational at Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth, RI before competing next month at the NCAA Division III national championships at Keene Trace Golf Club at Nicholasville, KY.
