Women's Lacrosse: Ventresca's Record-Setting Game Sparks Warriors

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Senior Shay Ventresca (Oakdale) broke the 20-year-old Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse scoring record for points in a game with 14 on nine goals and five assists, and first-year player Alexa Vizzini Vernon, NJ) added ten points when the Warriors routed Castleton University, 24-4, in a Little East Conference match Saturday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.

In a match featuring teams looking for their first conference wins, Eastern (3-8, 1-2 LEC) snapped a five-game overall losing streak by remaining unbeaten (9-0) all-time against Castleton (3-9, 0-3 LEC).

Ventresca connected on all nine of her shots – equalling the second-most goals in a match. Six of her goals came on free-position attempts, where Eastern converted seven of nine in the match. Her 14 points are two more than the previous game record of 12, set by Alumni Hall of Famer Mo Deegan against Rhode Island College on April 23, 2003.  Ventresca is ranked fourth all-time in assists (66), 70 behind all-time leader Deegan.

Vezzini followed with seven goals and three assists – equalling the fifth-most points in a match in program history.

Eastern scored the first 17 goals of the match before the Spartans broke through five minutes into the second half.

Sophomore Emma Alford (West Hartford) made eight saves in net while junior Kaylee Drobish (Wallingford) won six draws, sophomore Emma Oliano (Wallingford) four with three caused turnovers. The 15 turnovers are the least by the team in a match this year and the seven free-position goals are the most.
