WARWICK, R.I. – Sophomore Cal Angelo (Southington) shot identical four-over par 76s on both days to earn medalist honors and spark the Eastern Connecticut State University men's golf team to the team championship of the two-day Rhode Island College Spring Invitational which ended Saturday at the Valley Country Club.

Angelo trailed Ben Brodeur of Roger Williams University by one stroke after 18 holes on the first day but repeated his 76 on the second day while Brodeur shot eight-over par 80 on the second day. Angelo won by two strokes with a two-day total of 152 over Ben Wright of Wentworth Institute of Technology, who matched Angelo's four-over 76 on the second day after shooting six-over 78 over 18 holes Friday.

The outing was the first of the spring season for Eastern, which won four invitational championships in the fall, including the Little East Conference Championship Oct 6-7 which made it the LEC representative to next month's NCAA Division III Championships at Nicholasville, KY.

Eastern trailed Roger Williams by four strokes after the first day of play in the ten-team field, but rallied Saturday, eventually placing its top four golfers among the first 12 finishers in the final results. Eastern's two-day total of 629 was enough for a three-stroke victory over Roger Williams, which totaled a 321 Saturday – ten strokes more than its first-day total. The Hawks placed fourth in last year's RIC Invitational, four strokes better than Eastern's fifth-place finish in a field of 12 teams.

Behind Angelo, junior Ashton Lewis (Fairfield) – last fall's LEC Championship medalist -- was tied for third (78-77-155) with Brodeur. Sophomores Chris Davidson (New Milford) and first-semester transfer Matthew Orefice (Niantic) were among five players tied for eighth. Senior Andrew Gromko (Canterbury) shared 20th place among 48 individuals. Davidson shot 78-83-161; Orefice shot 78-83-161 and Gromko was 83-87-170.
Eastern hosts its spring invitational Thursday at 1 p.m. at Ellington Ridge Country Club.
