Field Hockey: Five Figure in the Goal-Scoring as Warriors Blast Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. – First-year players Betsy Davis (Enfield) and Grace Barlage (Guilford) staked the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team to a two-goal halftime lead and sophomore Emma Sanson (Thomaston) and junior Liz LaMarco (West Hartford) scored third-quarter goals less than a minute apart as the Warriors downed Nichols College, 5-2, in a non-conference match Tuesday night at Vendetti Field.

In the first meeting between the programs, Eastern collected 16 shots and 11 penalty corners to snap a three-match winless (0-2-1) streak with its second win on the road this year after an opening road loss. Nichols (3-4), which had lost its first three matches by a combined margin of 23-2, was coming off a 10-0 home loss to Endicott College.

Davis scored her first career goal with five minutes left in the first quarter and senior Leah Kowalasky (Middlebury) later potted her first goal of the year off a penalty corner – after the Bison had cut Eastern's lead to two with goals 32 seconds apart in the third quarter -- taken by sophomore Angelina Falleni (Byram, NJ), who had also assisted on Barlage's goal midway through the second quarter for her first two assists of the year. Sanson's goal was her first of the year.

LaMarco and Barlage – who also assisted on LaMarco's third-quarter goal -- share the team lead in goals (3) and points (7).

First-year sophomore goalie Hannah Jalowiec (Cheshire) was credited with her first win in her sixth start. She made three saves and left with a 4-2 lead after three quarters. First-year player Veronica McKenna (Wethersfield) stopped three shots in 15 shutout minutes to preserve the win in her second appearance.

Eastern visits Framingham State University Thursday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match at Maple Street Field. Eastern holds a 16-6 series lead against the Rams, who, prior to this year, were affiliate members of the Little East Conference.  Framingham stopped a nine-game losing streak at the hands of Eastern last year with a 2-0 victory at Rick McCarthy Field
