Warriors finish ten strokes up to win title for third straight year

WESTFIELD, Mass. -  Massachusetts College's Matt Gover shot a 1-over par 72 to win the Brett Williamson Invitational Men's Golf Tournament hosted by Westfield State University at Tekoa Country Club Wednesday, but it wasn't enough from preventing Eastern Connecticut State University from winning the team title for the third straight year.

Eastern  took home the team title for the third straight year with a team score of 315, ten strokes better than MCLA and New England College, who shared second place.

Junior co-captain Chris Davidson (New Milford) led the way for the Warriors with a 76 to finish third overall, and junior Matthew Orefice (Niantic) delivered a 79 out of the five spot for Eastern. They were Eastern's two players to break 80, with senior All-America Ashton Lewis (Fairfield) and sophomore Jake Napolitan (Agawam, MA) checking in with 80s. Napolitan was medalist at last week's season-opening Mitchell College Invitational and this past week's Little East Conference Player-of-the-Week. Playing out of the No. 4 spot, junior Cal Angelo (Southington) shot 85.

Also competing out of the Little East Conference were Keene State College and Rhode Island College, who placed eighth (351) and ninth (264) respectively in the ten-team field.

Gover made three birdies and four bogeys in the round, blitzing the front nine of the course in a 2-under 34. For Gover it was his fourth tournament win this year.

The players had perfect weather with temperatures in the low 70s and clear skies, on the 6,438-yard, par-71 course that includes a blend of four original Donald Ross designed holes with 14 more from Geoffrey Cornish.

Dean College's Michael Keefe was second in the individual scoring with a 74, followed by Davidson (76) and Rhode Island College's Jasper Bruin-Slot in fourth with a 77.

Eastern participates at the Bowdoin College Invitational this weekend at Brunswick (ME) Golf Club.
