Men's Soccer: Warriors Re-Gain Footing to Turn Back Falcons

Hosts erase 3-0 deficit before Eastern rallies

MEDFORD, Mass. – Junior forward Sean Cafferty's (Clinton) second game-winning goal in less than a week snapped a tie with 15 minutes left and powered the Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Fisher College Wednesday afternoon at Hormel Stadium.

After dominating play but only escaping with a 1-0 win over Fisher (3-2-1) in the first meeting between the programs exactly a year ago at Thomas Nevers Field, Eastern (2-2-1) led 3-0 with 11 minutes gone in the second half Wednesday, but needed Cafferty's  goal off an assist from senior forward Andrés Mayuri (West Hartford) – his fifth point of the afternoon – to send the Falcons to their second straight home loss to a Little East Conference opponent (Plymouth won, 5-3, nine days ago).

A member of the 15-team Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) – an NAIA conference with teams located throughout the country – Fisher erased Eastern's 3-0 lead by scoring three goals in five minutes early in the second half.

A goal by Mayuri and an own goal five minutes apart early in the first half had staked Eastern to a quick 2-0 lead, and Mayuri followed with his 19th career goal 11 minutes into the second half to balloon Eastern's lead to 3-0.

Senior keeper Dylan Pallanck (Willington) made two saves for his first complete-game win this year. Junior Eduardo Navarro – the CAC's Defensive Player-of-the-Week last week – made nine saves off 19 Eastern shots for the Falcons.

Eastern hosts Keene State College Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference match. The Warriors won their LEC opener last Friday at Nevers Field by a 4-0 score. Keene (2-2-1) tied homestanding Western Connecticut, 0-0, in its conference opener this past Saturday. The Colonials lost on penalty kicks in last year's LEC title game. Eastern eliminated Keene in the first round of last year's LEC playoffs at Nevers Field, 1-0, by converting an early penalty kick.
