Swimming: Men and Women Send off Seniors With Easy Wins in Home Finale

Warriors improve once-beaten records

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University swim program sent off the largest graduating class in program history (15 swimmers) with easy victories against Little East Conference opponents in the second and final home meet of the season Monday afternoon at the Sports Center Pool.

The Eastern women (6-1) remained unbeaten (12-0) all-time against Rhode Island College (3-2)  in dual meets with a 208-52 decision and improved to 23-4 against Western Connecticut (1-9) with their 14th straight dual-meet victory over the Wolves, 213-20. A fifth-year program, the men (4-1) coasted past Western Connecticut (5-3) for the second time in the two-meet series, 209-25. Rhode Island College does not feature a men's program.

Eastern's 15 outgoing swimmers were honored before the meet and with a post-meet reception. Competing in the final career home meet for the men were Elliot Anderson (Goffstown, NH), Drew Cavar (Vernon), Nathan Melia (Manchester) and Connor Scully (Oxford). One of the largest outgoing classes in the women's program's 28-year history included Jordan Allen (Westerly, RI), Elizabeth Anderson (Willington), Maya Brody (East Granby), Hanna Lasbury (Southington), Jenna Morin (Waterford), Jillian Norbut (Bristol), Zoe Pascual (Danbury), Nicole Sabio (Unionville), Nancy Scanlon (West Hartford), Kelly Schneider (Portland) and Lindsay Weaver (Newington).

Of the 28 events, the men and women both won all but one of the 24 individual races and all four relays. Relays comprising all first-year swimmers set the tone for the day by winning the opening 400 medley relay. The winning women's relay included Cassandra Wentzell (Wallingford), Emma Wheeler (Morris), Camille Attle (Bristol) and Stacey Sheno (Newington) ,while the men's victorious relay consisted of  Stephen Canavan (Ashford), Samuel Ainscough (Mystic), Nico Iannucci (Parsippany, NJ) and Ryan Jezek (Avon).

Western Connecticut captured one race, when sophomore Rafael Masbad trimmed Jezek at the finish by .23 seconds in the 50 freestyle.

For the women, the 12 first-place finishes in individual events were divided between eight different individuals, with Weaver and juniors Allison Ronan (Northbridge, MA) and Ceili Roberts (Stratford) and sophomore Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN) all winning twice, with Frisch also swimming the lead leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay. Roberts captured both disance freestyle events.

The men's 11 individual titles were shared by eight different individuals, as well, with juniors Ben D'Addario (Fairfield) and Connor Rego (Winsted) and Iannucci also completing the day as double winners. In addition to two individual wins, Iannucci and D'Addario swam the lead and anchor, respectivelly, on the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay.

Both teams are idle until closing out their dual meet seasons Jan. 26 at the University of Saint Joseph and Feb. 2 at Bridgewater State University. The Warriors close out their season Feb. 16-18 at the Little East Conference Championships at the Boston Sports Institute at Wellesley, MA. Both the men and women are coming off third-place finishes a year ago at the meet.
