Katelyn Herbert (Bethpage, NY) scored her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season and first-year keeper
Alex Ignatowicz (Coventry) made seven saves for her third full shutout in her last six starts as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team blanked Plymouth State University, 2-0, in a Little East Conference match Saturday afternoon at Arold Field.
With two LEC regular-season matches remaining, Eastern's (4-8-2, 2-2-2 LEC) win, coupled with VTSU Castleton's (7-7-1, 3-3-0 LEC) 2-1 loss at Massachusetts Dartmouth, moves the Warriors within a point of Castleton for fourth place in the conference. The third and fourth seeds host first-round LEC playoff matches Nov. 5.
The shutout is Eastern's fourth straight against Plymouth (5-9, 2-5 LEC). The teams had played to scoreless ties each of the previous two seasons after Eastern posted a 4-0 home win in 2021.
Herbert recorded the 12
th and 13
th goals of her career eight minutes apart early in the second half to help the Warriors even their record in the last six matches at 2-2-2. Junior
Lilly Simpson (Norwalk) was credited with her first assist of the season and senior
Hailey Cocca (Stratford) her team-leading sixth on Herbert's first goal, and first-year player
Brooke Bolles (Preston) earned her first career assist on Herbert's second.
In her eighth start (seventh straight), Ignatowicz raised her save percentage to an LEC-leading .891, and lowered her goals-against average to 0.84 – second-best in the LEC.
After hosting Framingham State University (2-12-1) in a non-conference match Wednesday at 4 p.m., the Warriors close out the regular season with LEC contests against Massachusetts Dartmouth next Saturday at 1 p.m. and at Massachusetts Boston Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (5-8-2, 2-4-0 LEC) shares sixth place in the conference with Plymouth State – two points behind Eastern – and UMass Boston (9-3-4, 4-1-1 LEC) shares second place with Western Connecticut, both with 13 points. The University of Southern Maine (11-2-2, 6-0-0 LEC) leads the LEC with 18 points.
