Softball: Hitting, Pitching and Defense Come Together in Two Victories in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – Graduate righty Alyssa Vilchez (Brampton, ON) and junior lefty Alexa Boone (Middletown) pitched complete games – allowing  a total of only four hits – and the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team collected 24 hits in two victories Thursday morning at Lincoln Park.

In an 11-0, 5 inning win over Sul Ross State University (9-9), Vilchez (3-2) pitched a three-hitter and sophomore leadoff hitter Emma Marelli (Waterford) paced a 12-hit attack by reaching three times with two hits and a walk and  scoring three runs and driving in three.

In an 8-2 victory over UW-Lacrosse (6-10) later in the day, Boone (2-1) pitched a one-hitter and graduate third baseman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) broke the career record with her 49th double and also belted her 25th career home run in Eastern's (5-3) second 12-hit attack of the day.

Against Sul Ross, Eastern scored at least one run in four of five innings, pushing across five runs on three hits and three walks after there were two out in the fifth, with Marelli clearing the bases with a double. SanGiovanni tied the program record for doubles in the top of the first with a two-out RBI drive that gave the Warriors a quick 1-0 lead.

In addition to Marelli, SanGiovanni, junior second baseman Maddi Sauve (Mansfield), junior centerfielder Maggie Baker (Hudson, MA), and sophomore DP Lily Kenefick (Southington) all had two hits against the Lobos, with Sauve reaching three times and scoring three runs.

Against Sul Ross, Vilchez faced only three batters over the minimum. She did not issue a walk and fanned one.

While Boone was retiring 13 in a row, the Warriors put the game away early by sending ten batters to the plate and scoring seven runs on six singles and SanGiovanni's two-run home run. After plating three against Sul Ross, Marelli drive in two more runs with a single in the second.

After Lacrosse scored an unearned run in the first with the aid of a hit, Boone retired 13 straight before leadoff hitter Brooke Howard singled  to shallow left. Marelli nearly made a spectacular catch on the soft liner by leaping to tip the drive and almost grabbing the ball with her back to the infield as it fell to the ground. Boone struck out one and walked five while allowing only one earned run.

On the day, Marelli, Sauve and SanGiovanni all had four hits, with Sauve scoring five runs and Marelli driving in five runs and scoring four and SanGiovanni plating four.First-year player Kaley Laird (Bristol) had her first hits and first RBI on the day. She had a pinch RBI single in the first game and had a  single in her first career start in the second game.

Defensively, the Warriors committed only one error and have now committed only four errors for a .981 fielding percentage in ei\ght games.

Led by Vilchez (.500), six regulars are batting over .300, with junior first baseman Maggie Rubeck (East Hampton, MA) at .429, Kenefick at .400, Marelli and Baker at .385 and SanGiovanni at .350.

A winner of its last three, Eastern closes out its spring trip Friday against St. Catherin University at noon ET and Sewanee: The University of the South, at 4:30 p.m. ET.
