WINCHESTER, Va. -- Shenandoah University graduate righty Jacob Bell threw a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team completed its opening weekend at Shenandoah's Mr. V Memorial Classic with its third loss in two days, 5-1, at Bridgeforth Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Bell (3-1) limited Eastern to two doubles and a single and a walk for No. 4-ranked Shenandoah (8-1), which has won six straight. Trailing 3-0, Eastern pushed across its only run in the top of the fifth when
Josh Cofrancesco (Southington) led off with a walk, stole second and rode home on
Jared Clark's (Bristol)Â one-out double,
Eastern's other baserunners: Cofrancesco singled through the right side with two out in the second but was left there on an inning-ending outfield fly ball; and
Jason Claiborn (Prospect) doubled with two out in the third but was stranded on an inning-ending ground ball to second;Â
Bell retired the final 14 batters in order, striking out five. This year, he has fanned 23 and walked only three in four starts. The complete game was his first of the season. Five Eastern pitched combined on a ten-hitter, walking seven and hitting a batter.

Dylan Scudder (Simsbury) pitched into the sixth inning in absorbing the loss. He was lifted after allowing an infield single leading off the sixth with the Warriors trailing, 3-1. Scudder gave up seven hits and walked four but was not charged with the run in the sixth after graduate righty
Nathan Furino (East Haven) retired the side by getting the first two outs on a strikeout and ground ball, and the Warriors escaped by throwing out a runner at home on a potential double-steal attempt.
Shenandoah leadoff batter Frankie Ritter reached safely in all 15 of his plate appearances in each of his team's three tournament games so far. He had 11 hits and four walks in three games, and recorded his 300th career hit Saturday against Eastern, where he tripled to lead off the game, singled twice, walked twice and scored twice.
