MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Oftentimes, the outcome of a women's lacrosse match is determined by the team that commands the most draw controls.
Not so Tuesday night, when Eastern Connecticut State University won half of the game's 30 draw controls, but couldn't stay with Montclair State University, which used a seven-goal third quarter to expand a four-goal lead to nine with 15 minutes left and went on to post a 19-8 non-conference victory at Sprague Field.
Montclair (5-2) piled up 37 shots and got seven goals from freshman Kaeley Sek, eight ground balls, seven caused turnovers, three goals and four assists from fifth-year player Lexi Robinson and five assists and four goals from junior Chelsea Stack to win its third straight this year and stop a two-game losing streak at the hands of Eastern (4-5), which fell to 3-4 away from Rick McCarthy Field.
Senior midfielder
Kaylee Drobish (Wallingford) had a goal and two assists to move within one of 100 points in her four-year career. Drobish also won seven of the team's 15 draws. Sophomore
Alexa Vizzini (Vernon, NJ), who grew up less than an hour from the MSU campus, had two goals, as did junior midfielder
Abby Parisi (Fairfield), who won five draws. Senior goalie
Mackenzie Brown (Southington) stopped nine shots.
Eastern (1-0 LEC) hosts 2023 Little East Conference playoff champion Plymouth State University (4-5, 0-1 LEC) Saturday at 1 p.m. The Panthers, a winner of their last seven against Eastern, snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday night by routing Bridgewater State University, 18-4, in a non-conference match at Panther Field.
