DANBURY, Conn. – The showdown for first place among women's lacrosse unbeatens never materialized, as three-time defending Little East Conference champion Western Connecticut State University sprinted to a seven-goal lead over Eastern Connecticut State University midway through the first quarter and went on to its 28
th consecutive conference regular-season win, 19-8, Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
WestConn's (11-5, 6-0 LEC) sixth straight overall win guarantees the Wolves at least a share of their fourth straight regular-season championship, needing only to win at Rhode Island College (2-12, 0-6 LEC) to wrap up their fourth straight unbeaten regular-season outright LEC championship.
Eastern (8-7, 5-1 LEC) will guarantee itself sole possession of second place and a bye through Tuesday's first round and into the Thursday semifinals of the LEC playoffs if it can stop a seven-game skid in the all-time series with Keene State College (10-5, 4-2 LEC) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rick McCarthy Field. A Keene win over Eastern Saturday and a Plymouth State University victory over UMass Dartmouth (9-6, 2-4 LEC) Friday would, unofficially, leave Eastern, Keene State and Plymouth State all sharing second place behind WestConn.
Keene shares third place with Plymouth State and is coming off an easy home win over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday night. The Owls have won six of their last eight, with the losses in that stretch coming by a total of five goals to visiting WestConn (11-8) April 13 and homestanding Plymouth State (16-14) this past Saturday.
Keene leads the LEC in scoring and is paced by fifth-year first-team All-LEC midfielder Haile Ratajack (50+ goals), second-team All-LEC senior attack Hanna Dworkin and sophomore midfielder Tess Brown, the latter currently two ranked 1-3 in the conference in assists.
Regardless of Saturday's outcome, Eastern, unofficially, is guaranteed its first LEC playoff home match – either in the first round or semifinals – since the second-seeded Warriors erased a five-goal second-half deficit and eliminated third-seeded Keene State, 17-15, in the 2018 semifinals at Rick McCarthy Field.
Wednesday, WestConn scored on free-position shots on its first two possessions, and made it 3-0 off an Eastern turnover five minutes into play, then had three shots on its next trip down field and made it 4-0 six minutes into the contest. Following an Eastern timeout, the Wolves won the ensuing draw and connected on another free-position attempt to make it a five-goal deficit midway through the period.
In riding to a 13-4 halftime lead, WestConn held the Warriors off the board for the first 12 minutes, turned the ball over only five times, capitalized on six minutes of Eastern penalties, and converted 13 of their 22 shots.
Senior Vicky Gracy, last year's LEC Midfielder-of-the-Year, was one of six WestConn players with multiple goals. Gracy had five goals and an assist, with sophomore Faye Junge adding three goals and three assists. Senior goalie Molly Bresnahan made 14 saves on 29 Eastern shots.
First-year defender
Neely Hart (Colchester) led Eastern with three goals, with junior midfielder
Abby Parisi (Fairfield) winning six of the team's 15 draws (Eastern equalled WestConn's total in that category) and won two ground balls.
First-year senior goalie
Mackenzie Brown (Southington) stopped ten shots.
