Softball: Vilchez' No-Hit Bid, Warriors Season Ends in Nine-Inning Regional Loss

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – For the second time in two days, Eastern Connecticut State University's opposing pitcher tossed a complete-game four-hitter en route to her 20th win of the year, and because of that, the Warriors were eliminated by Lebanon Valley College by a run in the elimination game of regional play for the second time in two years Friday afternoon at Broyles Field.

After losing to top seed and No. 8-ranked host Virginia Wesleyan University, 6-1, in Thursday's opening game, fourth-seeded Eastern (24-18-1) remained alive Friday morning with a 6-3 victory over third-seeded Gettysburg College (28-13) and were within an out of a return matchup Saturday in the championship round against Virginia Wesleyan before second-seeded Lebanon Valley (35-10) tied the game with two outs in the top of the seventh on an infield single, and won it with one out in the ninth on another infield single.

After sophomore lefty Emma Adams fired a complete-game four-hitter for Virginia Wesleyan Thursday for her 20th win in the Marlins' win over the Warriors, senior righty Jordan Walter did likewise for LVC Friday, posting her 20th victory with a complete-game effort and personally eliminating Eastern for the second straight year.

In the first round of last year's regional, Walter was outdueled by Eastern's Carley Stoker in the opening round but came back the next day to end the Warriors' season by outdueling Stoker in a 3-2 win.

This time, Eastern graduate righty Alyssa Vilchez (Brampton, ON) matched Walter with a complete-game four-hitter – the 24th straight complete game of the season. Vilchez carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning – allowing only one baserunner on a two-out walk in the fourth – before LVC tied the game in the seventh on two infield singles and a sacrifice bunt and won it in the ninth.

In a 1-1 game, the Warriors left the winning run on third base in the bottom of the seventh when Walter got an inning-ending ground ball. After going out in order in the eighth, Eastern had the tying and winning runs in scoring position in the ninth, but Walter ended the game on an infield pop.

Vilchez (21-10) pitched an eight-hitter and was backed by a nine-hit attack against three Gettysburg pitchers that kept the Warriors afloat Friday morning. Vilchez pitched five consecutive scoreless innings after the Bullets took a 1-0 lead in the first, and Eastern scored four times in the third and twice more in the fourth en route to the victory.

The Warriors amassed five of their game total of nine hits in their four-run third inning, with Vilchez, senior rightfielder Sarah Remillard (Grafton), junior second baseman Maddi Sauve (Mansfield) and graduate third baseman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) all driving in runs. SanGiovanni single scored junior centerfielder Maggie Baker (Hudson, MA) with the tyring run and Sauve's double put the Warriors ahead for good, 3-2.

Appearing in her 37th and 38th games of the season (third most in a season all-time), Vilchez allowed only four earned runs in 16 innings on 12 hits (11 singles). She fanned eight and walked six.

On the day, Sauve and three hits, SanGiovanni, Vilchez, Remillard, and first-year leftfielder Kaley Laird (Bristol) two each. Sauve's double was the only one of Eastern's 13 hits to go for extra bases. SanGiovanni's two hits left her one shy of the career record of 221 hits, held by two-time Eastern All-America and Alumni Hall of Famer Arielle Cooper, also a third baseman.
