Women's Volleyball: In Season-Opener, Warriors Breeze Past Jays in Three

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – First-year outside hitter Emma Robinson (Westlake Village, CA) had a match-high 12 kills with a .381 attack percentage and senior Bella Johnson (Marlborough) added seven kills on a match-high .462 attack percentage to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team to a season-opening sweep of the University of Saint Joseph Friday evening at Francis E. Geissler Gym.

In a match which lasted 69 minutes, Eastern led from start to finish in the first two sets in posting 25-12, 25-14, 25-10 wins en route to their 22nd straight victory over the Blue Jays,  who were also opening their season.

Eastern opened the match with the first four points behind the serving of junior setter Liz Squier (Trevor, WI) and later used a 9-1 run to expand  a six-point lead to 14, 23-9; in the second set, first-year setter Ariah Davis (Raleigh, NC)  served the Warriors to a quick 7-1 lead and sophomore Brooke Praskievicz (Moodus) later served five straight points to push the Warriors into a 15-3 lead; with Eastern leading by seven points in the final set, sophomore middle Haley Jo Bridges (Montebello, NY) served six straight points to spark a match-ending 11-2 scoring run.

Robinson had five kills (three straight late in the set) and only one attack error in the first set, connecting on her first attempt in an Eastern uniform early in the match.

Robinson, Johnson and Bridges combined on 26 kills and a .422 attack percentage, with Squire setting for 18 assists and Davis setting for eight. The Warriors committed only one reception error as a team, with junior libero Sadie Blackwell (Southbury) leading both teams with nine digs, Praskievicz adding six and Robinson five. Squire also had three service aces.

As a team, Eastern attacked at .266 and had ten service aces while the Blue Jays attacked at -.132 with ten reception errors.

Sophomore outside Shaye Harris led the Blue Jays with five kills, first-year setter Gabi Wanner setting for 13 assists and senior libero Fernanda Ayala Rodriguez collecting seven digs and Harris five.

Saturday at Saint Joseph's Calhoun Gymnasium, Eastern faces Mount Holyoke College at 2 p.m. and the host Blue Jays at 4 p.m.
