Swimming: Seniors Excel in Final Home Appearances of Careers

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – On a day dedicated to the seniors, more than half of them won individual events as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's and men's swim teams closed out their home seasons  by overwhelming the University of Saint Joseph on Senior Day Saturday at the Sports Center pool.
 
In all, the Eastern women (8-1) captured all 14 events – 12 individual and two relays – while the Eastern men (5-1) tooks firsts in ten of 12 individual events and both relays. The women won by a score of 208-48, the men by 188-60.
 
Before the final home meet of their careers, the program's 11 seniors and their families – six on the women's side and five on the men's side – were recognized for their dedication to the program. During the meet, three of the five men's seniors won events either as individuals or part of a relay (or both), while two of the six women's seniors did likewise.
 
For the women in their final home appearances, senior Allison Ronan (Northbridge, MA) won the 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley, while senior Ceili Roberts (Stratford) won the 500 freesyle. For the men, seniors Connor Rego (Winsted) and Joseph Sylvester (Morris) were double winners and also swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay while senior Ben D'Addario (Fairfield) won the 100 freestyle and swam the freestyle leg of the winning 200 medley relay. Rego won the 50 and 100 butterfly and Sylvester the 200 freestyle and 100 individual medley.
 
In his final home appearance, Rego broke the program record with a time of 24.74 in the 50 butterfly, giving him program records at all three butterfly distances.
 
In addition to Ronan, sophomore Cassandra Wentzell (Wallingford) was a double-winner in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle while sisters Ava Wheeler and Emma Wheeler (Morris) closed the home season by winning the 1000 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, respectively.
 
The Eastern women close out the regular season Saturday at Smith College and ends the season at the Little East Conference Championships Feb. 13-16 at the Boston Sports Institute, the Eastern women looking to defend last year's title.
