Swimming: Tito, Ames, Mathews Lead Warriors on Second Day of Fisher Invite

Both Eastern teams are fourth in competitive fields

NORTON, Mass. -- Junior Boden Tito (Southington) had the highest finish for the men and first-year swimmers Julia Ames (Pawtucket, RI) and Rachel Mathews (West Harford)  the best for the women on the second and final day of the Chris Fisher Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College Friday and Saturday at Balfour Natatorium.

Both Eastern teams were fourth after eight events on the first day of competition Friday and retained that ranking following Saturday's schedule of nine events. Babson College won the women's competition with 843 points, coming from 48 points back after the first day to edge Roger Williams University (825), followed by Wheaton College (657), Eastern (447) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine (7). Roger Williams (974.5) and Babson (882) finished 1-2 on the men's side, with Wheaton (657) third and Eastern (339.5) fourth. Roger Williams took a 27-point lead over Babson into Saturday's second day and expanded that margin.

For the Eastern men, Tito won the preliminaries of the 400 individiual medley Saturday morning and improved that time by nearly three seconds in the final (4:15.09) later in the afternoon and placed second in the final to Wheaton junior Kevin Rice, who knocked nine seconds off his preliminary to post a winning time of 4:11.84. Ames was fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.98) and Mathews fifth in the 400 IM (5:11.63) to pace the women.

Saturday, junior Molly Ryan (North Royalton, OH) and first-year swimmers  Madisyn Goldstein (Oxford) and Lauren Waitkus (Cheshire) were the only two women to compete in as many as two individiual events, while junior Ryan Jezek (Avon) was the only member of the men's team to compete in as many as two. Ames, Mathews and Waitkus led the women with 14 points each in individual events, with junior Camille Attle (Bristol), Goldstein and junior Ava Wheeler (Morris) each recording 12 points in individual events and Ryan ten.

One hundred and four of the women's final point total were accumulated by four relays, with the 200 medley relay of Waitkus, senior Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN), Attle and first-year swimmer Jai-Lynn Wheeler (Stonington) the highest finisher among the four relays, taking third place and collecting 30 points. Seventy of the men's point total came in three relays, with the 200 medley relay  and 400 freestyle relay both capturing seventh place.

Eastern participates in the Connecticut Cup Dec. 5-6. The event is hosted by Wesleyan University at Webster Family Natatorium.
