Swimming: Newcomers Join Veterans As Top Performers on Day 1 at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – Returning to the pool after a layoff from competition of nearly two weeks Friday on the first day of the Wheaton College Chris Fisher Invitational at the Balfour Natatorium, the Eastern Connecticut State University men's and women's swim team qualified 16 women and 11 men in the morning preliminaries as well as six relays for the finals later that evening.

After the first 16 events Friday, the Eastern men were in fourth place in the four-team field with 161 points while the Eastern women were fourth in a five-team field, with 200 points. In the men's field, Roger Williams University (479 points) held a 27-point lead over Babson College, while Roger Williams (426) led Babson by 48 points  in the women's competition. One hundred and four of the women's points came in the relays, with two relays placing fourth and two placing eighth. Ninety-two of the men's points came in four relays, with two grabbing seventh place, one eighth and one ninth.

The invitational continues Saturday, with preliminaries scheduled for 10 a.m. and the final competition set to being at 4 p.m.

Upcoming after Saturday:

The Warriors head into the second half of their schedule and complete first semester competition with their second straight two-day meet at the annual Connecticut Cup at Wesleyan University's Webster Family Natatorium Dec. 5-6. The Warriors begin the new year by visiting Keene State College and the University of Saint Joseph in January prior to hosting Norwich University Jan. 24 at noon at Senior Day.

At the ultra-competitive Connecticut Cup last year, the Eastern women placed fifth among eight teams and the men fifth among five teams. Last year's meet included men and women from Eastern, Wesleyan, Amherst College, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Trinity College, as well as the University of Saint Joseph, Albertus Magnus College and Elms College women.
