In the first of five games in four days in Florida, Eastern (5-3) collected double-figure hits for the sixth time this year – recording exactly 17 for the third time – and raced to a 6-0 lead after its first three at-bats. The Warriors took an 11-4 lead into the ninth before Otterbein (7-8) got three back.
In his second start (third appearance), Mach struck out five and walked only one, allowing only four hits and two earned runs and departing on the winning end of an 8-3 lead after six innings. The top four hitters in the Eastern lineup – all seniors -- combined for nine hits, drove in six runs and scored seven. No. 3 hitter and first-year shortstop
Michael Hernandez (Bridgeport) and cleanup hitter and leftfielder
Alejandro Soriano (Hartford) each reached four times with three hits and a walk, scored twice and drove in a run. Centerfielder
Ray Leonzi (Trumbull) and catcher
Hank Penders (Wethersfield) both had two hits, with Leonzi driving in three runs and Penders scoring twice and driving in a run with a sacrifice fly. Soriano tripled and Penders and Hernandez both doubled.
Also adding extra-base hits were sophomores
Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA) and
Teige Kimbler (Albany, NY). Moser reached four times with three hits (including a triple) and scored three runs and Kimbler doubled and singled, drove in a run and scored one.
At Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale Monday, Eastern hosts Springfield College at 4:15 p.m. and William Paterson University at 7:30 p.m.
