Baseball: Warriors Stay Hot (9-1 in Last Ten), Swat Three HRs in Victory

Nathan Furino wins 22nd career game on mound

Box Score
HOBOKEN, N.J. – Graduate righty Nathan Furino (East Haven) allowed only four hits and one earned run over the first six innings for his 22nd career pitching victory and the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team hit three home runs in erasing an early two-run deficit in an 11-2 non-conference win over Stevens Tech Monday evening at Dobbelaar Baseball Field.

The win is Eastern's (16-5) fourth in a row and ninth in its last ten games and sixth in seven games against Stevens Tech (16-11) as the Warriors improve to 13-5 this year away from the Eastern Baseball Stadium.  The Ducks had won ten of their last 11 heading into the game, including winning two of three at home against Arcadia University  in a Middle Atlantic Conference play this past weekend that improved their conference record to 11-1.

Trailing 2-0 after three innings, the Warriors scored three times in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good, added three more in the sixth and broke it open with four runs in the  eighth on a leadoff home run from  first-year senior transfer Michael Hernandez (Bridgeport)—second of the year – and a three-run shot from senior catcher Hank Penders (Wethersfield) – his third of the season.

Senior centerfielder Ray Leonzi (Trumbull) had tied the game in the fifth on a two-run double and he scored on a wild pitch to give Eastern the lead for good, 3-2. In the sixth, sophomore second baseman Teige Kimbler's (Albany, NY) first career home run – a three-run shot that plated Hernandez and sophomore first baseman Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA) – to make it 6-2.

After Stevens junior righty Jonah Swarts shut out Eastern on two hits over the first four innings and left with a 2-0 lead, seven subsequent relievers surrendered all 11 runs on ten hits, six walks and two hit batsmen.

Furino (3-0) struck out six and walked two, and with his 22nd win, moves into sole possession of ninth place all-time, snapping a four-way tie with Alumni Hall of Famers Gary Kinel and Czerwinski brothers Scott and Adam.

Leonzi, Penders, Michael Hernandez, Kimbler and senior rightfielder Alejandro Soriano (Hartford) all had two hits in Eastern's 12-hit attack, with Penders and Kimbler each driving in three runs and Leonzi two. Leonzi, Michael Hernandez, Moser and junior DH J.T. Clark (Bristol) all scored twice.

Eastern (5-1 LEC) hosts Keene State College (8-12, 1-1 LEC)  in a Little East Conference game Wednesday at 3 p.m.
