MANSFIELD, Conn. -- The Massachusetts Maritime Academy men's lacrosse team shut out Eastern Connecticut State University on three shots in the second quarter to pull away from a one-goal advantage after one quarter and post a 14-7 Little East Conference victory Tuesday night at Rick McCarthy Field.
The Buccaneers (7-3, 3-1 LEC) piled up 48 shots for a +14 shot advantage and claimed all but six of the game's 25 faceoffs, with senior faceoff specialist Brian Rosher winning 17 of 23 from the faceoff X and garnering eight ground balls along with junior midfielder Cooper Barrett.
After Eastern sophomore attack
Tanner Drobish (Wallingford) scored his only goal of the match in a man-up opportunity two minutes into the second half to get Eastern back to 8-3, Mass Maritime reeled off the last two goals of the third quarter and the first two of the fourth – with six different players contributing either a goal or assist – to move out to a 12-3 lead two minutes into fourth. The Buccaneers have won the last five meetings with Eastern after an opening loss in the series.
Team point leader James Sullivan, a freshman attack, led the Bucs with three goal and three assists, with sophomore attack Quinn Mucha – second in the conference in goals per game -- leading both teams with four goals. Mass Maritime is the LEC leader in goals-per-game and in assists per game.
Junior attack
Warren Channing (Glastonbury) – the LEC co-leader with 31 goals and the conference's leader in goals per game (3.44) -- led Eastern with three goals and sophomore midfielder
Connor Chirico (Milford) chipped in two goals, both players also assisting on a goal. Senior defenseman
Sean Ventresca (Montville) paced the defense by causing five turnovers and picking up five ground balls.
For the second straight game, Eastern was not flagged for a penalty and has now gone 135 minutes and 23 seconds without allowing an opposing extra-man opportunity. Drobish's man-up strike (on one of the team's two chances) improved the Warriors' extra-man scoring percentage to .410 (16-of-39). Charged with only 13 penalties in nine games, Eastern has allowed only three extra-man goals on 12 attempts (.250).
Eastern visits the University of Massachusetts Boston (9-2, 3-0 LEC) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in a Little East match at James Cotter Field. Unbeaten in six home matches this year, the Beacons visit Western Connecticut State University Wednesday in a battle of LEC unbeatens. The Beacons are the conference leader in goals and assists and are backed by sophomore goalie James Boldy, ranked second in the LEC in goals-against average and save percentage.
