Men's Golf: McDaniel (+12) Tops Warriors at Bowdoin College Invitational

Junior shares 46th place in field of 97

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Competing in the Bowdoin College Invitational for the third straight year on Saturday and Sunday, the Warriors placed 15th in a field of 17 at the 6,601-yard, par-72 Brunswick Golf Club.

Eastern totalled 642 points over the two-day, 36-hole event for a combined 66-over par, edging Wesleyan University (+68) and the University of New England (+73) and behind 14th-place Colby College (+50). Eastern was 25-over on the first day and 41-over on the secon day.

Amherst College, 18th last spring at the NCAA Division III Championships, won the team title (+17), with host Bowdoin fourth (+21). 

Sophomores took the top three spots in the field of 97 golfers, with Derek Johnson of Western New England University and Myles Quinn of Endicott sharing medalist honors at 2-under 142, with Sam Dolan of Drew University third at 1-under 143.

At this event previously, Eastern finished in a tie for fifth in 2023 behind All-America Ashton Lewis, who was second individually, and 11th in 2024.

Junior Ethan McDaniel (Orange), last year's Little East Conference Player and Rookie-of-the-Year, led Eastern, followed by junior Ryan O'Donnell (Southington), sophomore Drew Johnson (Gloucester, MA), senior Jake Napolitan (Agawam, MA) and junior Nico Coloneri (New Milford).  Tied for 22nd a year ago at 7-over 151 and the only Eastern returnee to this event, McDaniel finished in a six-way tie for 46th this year at +12 with 156 points; O'Donnell finished in a two-way tied for 59th (+14, 158), Napolitan in a five-way tie for 69th (+17, 161), Johnson  in a two-way tie for 90th (+23, 167), and Coloneri in a two-way tie for 93rd (+26, 170).

Eastern competes at the Mitchell College Invitational Wednesday at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton before participating in the LEC Championshps Oct. 9-10 at The Redding Country Club, hosted by Western Connecticut State University. The Warriors close out the fall season Oct. 18-19 at the 90th NEIGA Championships at The Captains Golf Course in Brewster, MA.

ETHAN McDANIEL

After shooting 4-over 76 on the first day, McDaniel was 8-over 80 on Sunday. On Sunday, he parred 11 holes, bogied six and double-bogied one. He finished stroke with six birdies over the final eight holes on the back nine.

RYAN O'DONNELL

O'Donnell shot 6-over 78 on Saturday and 8-over 80 on Sunday. On Sunday, he had one birdie and matched McDaniel with 11 pars and also had four bogies, one double and one triple bogie.  His birdie came on the par-4, 377-yard eighth hole. 

JAKE NAPOLITAN

Napolitan show 5-over 77 Saturday and 12-over 84 on Sunday. Like O'Donnell on Sunday, he birdied the par-4, 377-yard eighth hole, parred eight holes (seven coming on the back nine), bogied six hols and had two double and one triple bogie.

DREW JOHNSON

Johnson shot 10-over 82 Saturday and 13-over 85 on Sunday. On Sunday, he birdied No. 17 (par-4, 312 yards) and No. 18 (par-4, 395 yards), parred four holes, bogied nine holes and double-bogied three.

NICO COLONERI

Coloneri shot 11-over 83 on the first day and 15-over 87 on Sunday. On the second day, he parred  five holes -- including three of the final four --, bogied 11 and double-bogied two.
