GORHAM, Maine -- While a victory on Saturday would have been ideal for Eastern Connecticut State University Men's Soccer against the University of Southern Maine, a 0-0 tie would end up sufficing to inch the Warriors closer to returning to the Little East Conference Tournament. Snapping a four-match losing streak while extending their unbeaten streak against the Huskies to 18 consecutive matches, last fall in 2007, Eastern entered the day tied with Plymouth State University for the sixth and final spot, but it was the Panthers holding the tiebreaker after defeating the Warriors in Mansfield, Connecticut, earlier this season.
However, in a tightly packed conference race, an 8-1 loss for Plymouth State at the hands of UMass Boston on Saturday subsequently boosted the Warriors into sole possession of sixth place with just one match remaining against Rhode Island College at home next Wednesday. Trailing the fourth-place Anchormen by four points and fifth-place Huskies by two points, Eastern cannot finish higher than fifth in the standings, meaning no matter what, if they qualify for the postseason dance, they will be heading on the road for a Little East Conference Quarterfinals matchup as either the fifth or sixth seed next Saturday.Â
But Eastern will have to take care of business against Rhode Island College, as a tie or loss opens the door for Plymouth State to either tie or pass them, should they defeat the Huskies on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. The only way in which the Warriors can ensure their spot in the LEC Tournament no matter the result of any other LEC matchup would be a win against the Anchormen at home.
Continuing a streak that dates back to the LEC Quarterfinals of last season, spanning 14 matches now, Eastern has not allowed a first-half goal, after an opening 45 minutes that saw junior goalkeeper
Jack Harmon need to make just one save, right before halftime, against first-year forward Christian Vega Garcia. Opposite him was senior goalkeeper Gabe Wagner, who did not face a shot on goal, in a half that saw the Huskies outshoot the Warriors, 6-5, overall.Â
Across the entirety of the match, Southern Maine held a 16-11 edge in shots, including 4-1 in shots on goal, while corner kicks were fairly even, with the Huskies eking out a narrow 5-3 margin, all five of which came in the second half of the affair. That left the Warriors with just one shot on goal, an attempt from first-year forward
Jaden Lima, in the 89th minute, as the only threat against Wagner, which he quelled. As for Harmon, he came up with three second-half saves as part of his fourth shutout of the season, finishing with four total saves.
Preparing for a pivotal final match of the regular season, Eastern welcomes Rhode Island College to Rick McCarthy Field on Wednesday at 4:00 PM. The Warriors have dropped their last four matches against the Anchormen since 2023, all of which, outside of last year's 3-1 result, have been decided by one goal.Â
