MANSFIELD, Conn. – Eastern Connecticut field hockey (5-5, 0-1 LEC) dropped its conference opener in a tough double overtime defeat to Southern Maine (7-4, 1-0 LEC), 2-1 on Saturday (Oct 3).
Eastern's goal came off the stick of junior
Audrey Molin as the Vernon, Conn., native continues her hot start to the season. Molin's 14 goals on the season are now the second-most in school history in a single season and just one back of the program record (15) that was set twice.
Southern Maine struck first at 13:10 in the first quarter. The Huskies earned a penalty corner a shot from the left wing beat
Veronica McKenna to make it 1-0.
Less than five minutes into the second quarter, Molin struck to tie the game.
Sarah Weber put the ball back in play at Eastern's 23-meter line. Weber sent the ball down the length of the field and Molin outran the defense to steal the ball and beat Southern Maine's goalie one-on-one.
For the second time in its last three games, Eastern found itself in overtime after a scoreless second half.
Halfway through overtime, Eastern had its best chance to score after a turnover by the Huskies led to another chance for Molin but Southern Maine's goalie Haylee Romasco made the save to keep the game tied at one.
Just a minute into overtime, Southern Maine's Bri Townsend got the ball in the middle of the field right in front of Eastern's goal and found the back of the net with her shot to end the game.
