Softball: Warriors Drop Twinbill to Springfield, Pride’s Late Rally Denies Split

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A bottom-of-the-sixth Springfield rally stunned the Warriors as the Eastern Connecticut softball team dropped a doubleheader to the Pride, falling 3-5 in the opener and 12-13 in the nightcap, Tuesday afternoon at Potter Field.

Key Moment (GM1)
  • After a silent five innings, Springfield scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a three RBI double from Amelia DeRosa to take the late 5-3 lead.
How it Happened (GM1):
  • As both teams trudged through five empty innings, Eastern broke the silence first in the top of the sixth. Sparked by Kaley Laird (Bristol) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Coventry), who each singled to get the game in motion before Maddy Bowen (Hudson, NH) complemented with an added base hit, Jordan Bennett (Plainville, MA) pinch ran, to load up the bases. 
  • Jenna Maus (Woodbridge) then delivered a two-RBI double to the right center to give Eastern a 2-0 lead (Ashlyn Kenefick (Southington) pinch ran for Maus), and Abby Thompson (Westborough, MA) followed with an RBI single to extend the advantage to 3-0.
  • Springfield responded to Eastern's run in the bottom half. After putting runners on base, with a Reilly Hunter single and a Carissa Pecchia walk, the Pride set things in motion, kicked off by Emilia Santiago, Springfield scored two runs on a double and single to cut the deficit to 3-2, and with two outs, Amelia DeRosa doubled to center field, delivering a Three-RBI to give Springfield the 5-3 lead.
Stats (GM1):
  • Laird and Mitchell each recorded two hits, and Laird swiped a base.
  • Maus drove in two runs, and Thompson added an RBI 
  • Mitchell struck out seven batters over six innings pitched, allowing five runs on eight hits.
Key Moment (GM2):
  • Springfield took off with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase Eastern's late 12-8 lead, with Pecchia delivering a three-RBI double to complete the comeback victory.
 How it Happened (GM2):
  • Eastern jumped out with an early 5-1 lead in the top of the second, backed by a string of hits and wild pitches to fuel the lead. Mitchell singled and later scored on a wild pitch while Bennett also advanced.
  • By the top of the 5th, Eastern built a 12-4 advantage with a Grace Jenkins single up the middle and a Julia Boya (Coventry) advance and Bennett scoring play, Springfield trialing 12-4.
  • With a wild momentum change, Springfield powered through the bottom of the fifth (12-8) and fought back in the bottom of the sixth. Maddie Testo's single and a subsequent wild pitch set the stage. What followed was a series of singles, stolen bases, and defensive errors that allowed the host to score, highlighted by Carissa Pecchia, who capped the inning with a three-RBI double, giving Springfield a 13-12 edge they would hold firm.
 Stats (GM2):
  • Mitchell went 3 for 4 with three RBI's and two doubles, Laird added a hit, three RBI's, and stole two bases.
  • Jerkins drove in two runs, Boya scored three times,
  • Leah Chatfield (Naugatuck), Julia Raymond (Woonsocket, RI), Mitchell, and Elizabeth Marchand (Andover) combined to allow 13 runs on 12 hits, with Marchand taking the loss.

The Warriors will face Trinity College for a double-header at home, 3:00 & 5:00 p.m., Saturday at Clyde Washburne Field.
