DUDLEY, Mass. -- Coming off a 13-0 win in the first game of the non-conference twinbill, Eastern (10-6) struck first in the top of the opening inning when
Kaley Laird (Bristol) walked, later advancing to third on a single by
Maddy Bowen (Hudson, NH) , and scored on a groundout by
Jenna Maus (Woodbridge), giving the Warriors an early 1-0 lead. Nichols' (8-12) Sydney Hicks answered the Warriors immediately, launching a leadoff home run over left-center to tie the game 1-1.
After slow action, the game changer came in the bottom of the third, Nichols exploded for four runs, turning the 1-1 tie into a 5-1 lead. Pioneered by Mary Jo-Laudati's RBI single, a bases-loaded walk to Kyla Felicani, and RBI singles from Madison Scribner and Riley Chartier, Nichol's pulled away, definitely in their rally, assuming total control of the game as Eastern's pitchers struggled to contain the Bisons' timely hitting during the inning.
The Warriors struck back in the fourth, edging the deficit off of
Reagan Lalor's (Danbury) two-RBI double, which scored
Sam Healy (Cranston, RI) and Maus, cutting the deficit to 5-3, but despite loading the bases shortly after, the Warriors struggled to extend the rally, leaving three runners stranded to cap their scoring.
Nichols walked off with two more insurance runs in the fifth and final inning. One wild pitch gave them the extra point while they received another on an RBI walk from Riley Chartier to finalize the 7-3 victory. Bison's started Olivia Pedro earned the win.
Eastern returns to Little East Conference action Saturday, hosting Western Connecticut State University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Senior Recognition Day.
