MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Sophomore pitchers
Elizabeth Mitchell (Coventry) of Eastern Connecticut State University and Ella Zobel of the University of Hartford dominated in the circle with complete-game victories in their respective starts as their teams split a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Clyde Washburne Field.
Mitchell (9-2) pitched a two-hitter in recording her fourth complete-game shutout in ten starts this year in Eastern's (13-7) 12-0, five-inning win in the opener, while Zobel (4-1) followed in the nightcap with a four-hitter – three of the hits coming in the first inning – in Hartford's (12-8) 5-2 victory.
Game 1: Eastern Conn. 12, U. of Hartford 0 (5 inn.)
The Warriors collected 15 hits in the opener, breaking the game open by scoring five runs in the third on five hits and batting around in the fourth and tacking on six more runs on seven hits. Sophomore third baseman
Sam Healy's
(Cranston, RI) team-leading third home run of the season plated three of the runs in the third while six different batters drove in one run each in the six-run fourth.
Number 9 hitter
Julia Boya (Coventry) and leadoff hitter Mitchell – ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on the team in hitting – were among six players to record two hits. Mitchell doubled home Boya (leadoff infield single) for the first run of the fourth inning and also scored two runs in the game, while Boya stole the first of her two bases on the day to maker her 11-for-11 this year on the basepaths.
Junior shortstop
Grace Jenkins (Groton) and Healy each had two hits and each scored two runs, with Healy knocking in those three runs in the third inning, with Jenkins singling in both the third and fourth and scoring each time and driving in a run in the fourth. Healy also tripled and scored the first run of the game in the second on junior rightfielder
Reagan Lalor's (Danbury) double.
Mitchell fanned four and walked four in lowering her staff-leading ERA to 2.02
Game 2: U. of Hartford 5, Eastern Conn. 2
Zobel scattered four singles, three of them coming when Eastern scored a run in the first inning. Zobel did not allow a hit over the final five innings after Boya's bunt single with one out in the second. Only three of Eastern's final 20 batters reached safely – all on Zobel's only three walks of the game. She struck out six and gave up only one earned run.
Sophomore
Julia Raymond (Woonsocket, RI) and first-year player
Leah Chatfield (Naugatuck) split the pitching chores for Eastern. Making her second start of the year, Raymond pitched into the fourth inning and departed with a runner on in a 2-2 game. The Hawks broke the tie on No. 3 hitter Gia Miccio's two-out RBI single and added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh against Chatfield (3-2).
While the Hawks pushed across what proved to be the winning run in the fourth, Boya kept the damage at one run by throwing out two runners out at the plate in the inning with throws to first-year catcher
Jenna Maus (Woodbridge).
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Eastern got one back in the bottom of the inning when leadoff hitter
Jordan Bennett (Plainville, MA) singled, moved up on Laird's sacrifice bunt and came home on Mitchell's single to left. Eastern tied the game with an unearned run in the second when Jenkins reached second on an inning-opening error, advanced to third on a ground out and dashed home on Boya's bunt single.
In a 2-2 game, the Hawks chased Raymond when they pushed across the go-ahead run on back-to-back walks and Miccio's single.
Four Hartford hitters had two or more hits. Leadoff hitter Demetra Stamboulos reached four times with three singles and a walk and scored the go-ahead run and the first insurance run in the sixth.
Eastern returns to Little East Conference action Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at VTSU Castleton. Eastern (4-0) and Castleton (2-0) are the LEC's two undefeated teams. The Spartans visit Keene State College Thursday in a conference doubleheader prior to hosting the Warriors.
