Baseball: Surging All-America 3B Broadhurst Recognized Nationally

NCAA DIVISION III NCBWA NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 
The no-hitters keep coming in NCAA Div. III, this time with a pitcher in the City University of New York Athletic Conference firing one. A four-home run week and a 10-for-18 showing rounded out this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Div. III honors. The sixth selections in 2022 were chosen based on games March 28-April 3.
 
HITTER OF THE WEEK
Eastern Connecticut State University senior third baseman Luke Broadhurst was named Little East Conference Player of the Week after batting .700 (7-for-10) and slugging 1.900 in a 3-0 week for the third-ranked Warriors. Broadhurst had four homers, 10 RBI, and eight runs scored over the week. He opened the week going 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and three runs scored in a 13-1 non-conference win over Wheaton College (Massachusetts). The senior then went a combined 4-for-6 with three dingers, three walks, seven RBI, and five runs scored as Eastern Connecticut State notched 11-5 and 14-1 conference victories over Plymouth State University (New Hampshire) on Saturday.
 
Honorable Mention Hitter: Jacob Charon, Sr., OF, Lawrence University (Wisconsin) – Midwest Conference Position Performer of the Week after smacking four homers in Lawrence's doubleheader sweep of Grinnell College (Iowa) on Saturday. Went 6-for-10 with nine RBI and six runs scored in the three-game series with the Pioneers. In the opener, he went 2-for-3, drove in four runs, and scored three times. Charon hit a two-run homer in the fifth and followed that with a two-run homer in the sixth, as the Vikings won 11-0. In the second game, Charon went 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored in a 14-10 victory. He hit a three-run homer in the first inning and blasted a two-run homer in the ninth. Charon now has nine home runs on the season and that ties the Lawrence season record just 13 games into the campaign.
 
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
John Jay College's (New York) sophomore Ismael Tatis fired last week's no-hitter in NCAA Div. III. The CUNY Pitcher of the Week went seven innings, did not allow a run, and struck out four to lower his season ERA to 3.60. Tatis and the Bloodhounds beat University of Valley Forge (Pennsylvania) 11-0. Tatis needed just 86 pitches and he faced two over the minimum in the no-no.
 
Honorable Mention Pitcher: Danny Thompson, So., North Carolina Wesleyan College – USA South Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after setting a modern-day program record with 17 strikeouts in a complete-game, 11-inning, 5-3 victory over USA South foe Averett University (Virginia). Thompson allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while throwing 140 pitches.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Westfield State University (Massachusetts) outfielder Samuel Palmer batted .556 (10-for-18) with two doubles, a triple, home run, seven RBI, five runs scored, a stolen base, and a .944 slugging percentage in a 3-1 week for the Owls. The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player and Rookie of the Week belted a home run and a double in a 6-5 setback against Coast Guard Academy (Connecticut). He went 6-for-9 with a double, triple, five RBI, and two runs scored in the doubleheader sweep of Fitchburg State University (Massachusetts) on Saturday. That followed up a hit and run scored in a 4-2 win over Fitchburg State on Friday.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters, and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates, and official votes in the Dick Howser Player of the Year Award, Regional Player of the Year, and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication contests, and writing contests.

The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its tenth season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the eighth Team of the Week of the 2022 season.

3B  Luke Broadhurst, Sr., Eastern Connecticut State

Broadhurst raised his batting average 70 percentage points with a 7-for-10 (.700) week in three Warrior victories, which included four home runs, ten RBI, eight runs scored and a 1.900 slugging percentage.

C  John Mulready, So., Endicott

Mulready slashed .583/.583/1.583 in three games for the Gulls. He was 7-for-12 with four home runs, six RBI and four runs scored. Defensively, Mulready was perfect in the field (38 putouts, 1 assist) and caught his only would-be base stealer.

1B  Mark Kirkland, Sr., Redlands

Kirkland had a big weekend for Redlands as he went 11-for-15 with three doubles, a triple, five runs scored, seven runs batted in along with hitting .733, an OBP of .750 and slugging 1.067. He totaled 16 bases with four extra base hits and defensively was perfect with 21 putouts, a double play and two assists.

2B  Jack Millen, Fr., Merchant Marine

Millen had a monster week at the plate for the Mariners, hitting .714 (10-for-14) with four doubles, seven RBI and five runs scored, while also swiping three bases on three attempts.

SS  Blake Greenly, Jr., Lancaster Bible

Greeley batted .769 (10-for-13) in three games. He hit three doubles and three home runs for a 1.693 slugging percentage. He drove in eight and score six.

OF  Jacob Charon, Sr., Lawrence

Charon smacked four homers in Lawrence's doubleheader sweep of Grinnell on Saturday and went 6-for-10 (.600) with nine runs batted in and six runs scored in the three-game series with the Pioneers. Charon now has ten home runs on the season breaking the Lawrence season record just 14 games into the campaign.

OF  Luke Leavitt, So., Mass.-Boston

Leavitt hit a career-best .800 in the Beacons 2-2 week, He combined for eight hits in 10 at-bats and had three run scored, eight RBI, one double and one home run, He was walked once and stole three bases and struck out only once.

OF  Jalen Ping, Jr., Illinois Wesleyan

Ping led the Illinois Wesleyan University offense this week. For the week, he accumulated a whopping .714 average (5-for-7), five runs, three doubles, eight RBI, and a 1.143 slugging percentage.

OF  Aaron Whitley, Jr., Rochester

Whitley combined to go 5-for-6 (.833) in a doubleheader sweep over Vassar on Saturday, Rochester's lone action of the week. The junior outfielder added a double, triple, five runs scored, two RBI and four stolen bases in the sweep. Whitley combined to reach base 8 out of 9 (.888) times from the leadoff spot in Rochester's lineup. He also added a home-run robbing catch in the first game, a 7-4 UR win.

DH  Daniel Rogers, So., Loras

Rogers had a hot bat for the Duhawks in five games during the week with 12 hits (22 at-bats) and a .545 batting average. He had five extra base hits (three doubles, two home runs), driving in seven and scoring six.

SP  Tyler Horvat, Jr., Washington & Jefferson

Horvat totaled 15 scoreless innings last week for the Presidents. Horvat picked up PAC victories over Chatham and Bethany during a 7-0 week for W&J. The junior righty allowed just two hits and struck out four over 6.0 innings against Chatham Tuesday. Horvat recorded a complete game shutout Saturday against Bethany. He struck out five and allowed four hits against the Bison. Horvat limited the opposition to a .125 batting average and did not issue a walk last week.

SP  Stephen Sewruk, Sr., Benedictine

Sewruk tossed seven shutout innings against Marian, allowing just two hits with a walk and striking out nine to earn his first win of the season in the conference opener.

SP  Ismael Tatis, So., John Jay

Tatis fired a no-hitter in an 11-0 victory at the University of Valley Forge. The sophomore threw seven innings and did not allow a run and struck out four.

SP  Casey Trapp, Jr., Saint John's (Minn.)

Trapp struck out a career-high 13 batters in a complete-game shutout (6-0) as Saint John's completed a MIAC-opening sweep of Concordia on Saturday. Trapp allowed two hits and two walks in the 112-pitch shutout and had a no-hitter through the first 4.2 innings. The 13 strikeouts were the most by a Johnnie pitcher since Michael Crees struck out 13 against Bethany Lutheran in 2006.

RP  Chris Hess, Jr., Centenary (N.J.)

Hess provided a big lift out of the bullpen on Friday against Neumann. He entered a two-run game with a runner on third and no outs and kept that runner from scoring. He went two innings to earn the save and did not allow a hit or a run while allowing two runners to reach via a walk.

RP  Sam Mathews, Sr., Marietta

Matthews helped No. 1 Marietta to a 4-0 week including two wins over No. 21 Denison. Mathews pitched in two games, both against Denison, getting a 4.0 inning save in the first game and a 5.0 relief win in the second game. Opponents hit just .143 against him getting only 4 hits in 9.0 innings of work to go along with 0 walks and 7 strikeouts.
