Box Score BOSTON, Mass. -- Eastern Connecticut State University senior men's soccer goalkeeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, NJ) enjoyed a career day Saturday afternoon in the Warriors' 2-0 Little East Conference win over the University of Massachusetts Boston.
A four-year starter, Appel broke program career records in the match with his 26th shutout and 75th appearance in making a career-high 11 saves en route to his 50th career win against 15 losses and seven ties. The victory extends his program record in that department. He also holds program records among goalkeepers for starts (74), minutes (6,455), and goals-against average (0.77).
In four career starts against UMass Boston (8-5-0, 1-4 Little East), Appel has allowed only one goal in 315 mnutes. He also shut the Beacons out as a freshman in 2008.
For Eastern, ranked No. 8 in New England, sophomore Tom Vear (Monson, MA) scored his second goal of the season less than two minutes before halftime and added his team-leading fifth assist when junior Matt Furman (Montville) contributed his team-leading sixth goal of the year a little more than three minutes into the second half.
The victory – Eastern's 12th straight over UMass -- keeps the Warriors atop the Little East standings with a 5-0-0 record (9-3-1 overall) and moves them to within two of their first perfect LEC regular season in 23 years of play (in 1991, they were 4-0-1) and a step closer to at least a share of their third LEC regular-season crown in the last five years.
Eastern hosts Babson College Sunday at 3 p.m. at Thomas Nevers Field. The Beavers are ranked third in New England and 20th nationally. Eastern beat Babson on its own field both last year and in 2009.
