Box Score WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Mitch Power(Douglas, MA) headed in Christopher Giustina's (Enfield) corner kick four minutes into the second half to propel No. 24 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University to a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over upset-minded Worcester State University.
One of only three undefeated, untied teams in this week's Division III national Top 25, Eastern (10-0-0) and Worcester State (1-7-1) were locked in a 1-1 tie before Power knocked in Giustina's corner kick early in the second half for his fourth goal of the year – all of which have been game-winners.
Eastern repeated as New England's fourth-ranked team this week but made its first appearance in the national rankings at No. 24.
Team scoring leader Matt Furman (Montville) scored from eight yards in a scramble in front of Worcester freshman keeper Nick Zucco to give the Warriors the lead in the tenth minute but the Lancers countered two minutes later when Worcester scoring leader Brendan Whitson scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Eastern remained unbeaten in nine tries against Worcester in this series, with the team's meeting for the first time in 15 years. The Lancers competed in last year's ECAC New England Tournament but are now winless (0-5-1) in their last six outings.
The Warriors have won their first ten matches for the first time since capturing their first 15 en route to the 1969 New England championship and final 16-2 record.
Eastern visits Keene State College Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference match in the first meeting between the programs since the Warriors posted a 1-0 home win in the LEC playoff finals last year.
