MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman Sara Barnick's first career goal stood up after sophomore keeper Ashley Hebert preserved a shutout by saving a penalty kick for the University of Saint Joseph (CT) in a 1-0 women's soccer victory over host Eastern Connecticut State University  on the second day of the Warrior Classic Saturday night at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Saint Joseph (1-1-0) avenged a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Eastern (1-1-0)  in the second round of last year's tournament and handed the Warriors their first tournament loss after three victories in two years in the  tournament.

Barnick and junior Patricia Nolan converted a 2-on-1 opportunity against Eastern first-year sophomore transfer keeper Rachel Skelton (East Lyme) with ten minutes left in the match for the only goal.

Hebert kept the game scoreless when she made a diving stop of an Eastern penalty kick midway through the second half.. Neither team managed a shot after Barnick lifted the Blue Jays into the lead.

Eastern started three newcomers on the back line. Playing in front of Skelton were freshmen defenders Georgea Karahalios (South Windsor) and Kaitlin Thibodeau (Tolland). They were joined in the starting backfield by sophomore Whitney Mantel (Stamford) and junior Megan Godwin (Manchester).

Eastern allowed only one goal in the 90-minute match despite playing without four starters: senior keeper Mackenzie MacLeod (Northfield), senior forward Taylor Buchanan (Ellington), senior midfielder Chelsea Downer (Colchester) and junior midfielder Tamar Merheb (Bethel). Buchanan and Merheb are all-conference performers.

Eastern faces MIT Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Valiant Classic, hosted by Manhattanville College.
