Eastern Volleyball Splits Non-Conference Pair at U.S. Coast Guard

 NEW LONDON, Conn.—  Eastern Connecticut State University senior Katie Wilson (Pittsburg, CA) led the way with 14 kills to go with eight digs and junior Samantha Browning (Mystic) added 11 kills as the Warriors swept Wheaton College (MA), 25-10, 25-23, 25-23 in non-conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Roland Field House.

Against Wheaton (3-8), junior Nicki Gasch (New Fairfield) added eight kills while sophomore Allie Henry (Middletown) led Eastern (5-6)  with 24 assists.

In the third match of the day, host Coast Guard (5-4) won its 19th straight home match with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-16) victory over the Warriors. Ranked No. 6 in New England, Coast Guard defeated Eastern for the fourth straight time.

In defeating Wheaton for the seventh time in the last eight meetings, the Warriors jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the opener and used a 6-1 run later to open up a 17-8 lead en route to the victory.  In the second set, Eastern led 23-16 before Wheaton scored seven of the next eight to pull to within 24-23. In the third set, Eastern led 15-9. Wheaton rallied to tie it 19-19.

Freshman Anastasia Tammen led the Lyons with 10 kills while classmate Page Gustofson had a team-high 16 assists..

Against Eastern, Coast Guard's Catherine Walker and Karen Matic led the way with seven kills each while freshman Ashley Dumont had six kills and Kelsey DePorto five.
Matic had a team-high 11 assists while Elise Sako added three aces and seven digs.

Freshman Kendyl Jacobs led the Lyons with four kills to go with four blocks, classmate Robyn D'Agostino had seven digs and freshman Elisa Waelder had three aces and four blocks.

Eastern looks for its first Little East Conference win after an opening loss when it visits Keene State College Saturday at noon. At Keene, the Warriors also face Western New England University at 2 p.m. in a non-conference match.
