Box Score 2 KEENE, N.H. – Two kills and two service aces gave the Keene State College women's volleyball team a late lead in the important second set and the Owls went on to sweep Eastern Connecticut State University in Little East Conference competition Saturdawy afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium.
After losing for the fourth straight time against Keene (6-7, 2-0 LEC), Eastern (5-8, 0-2 LEC), couldn't close out Western New England University (10-1) in a non-conference match as the Golden Bears rallied for the final two set victories.
Keene, which has reached the LEC tournament championship match twice in the last four years (winning once), submitted a 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 victory over Eastern while Western New England defeated the Warriors for the first time in the last four tries by scores of 25-17, 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8. Eastern lost for the third time in four matches this year decided in five.
After a kill by 6-foot-2 inch reshman Brooke Curran (Chelmsford, MA), Eastern led the second set against Keene by a point in the late stages before the hosts used consecutive kills and consecutive service aces to surge to a 22-19 lead. In all, Keene outscored Eastern 7-1 after Curran's go-ahead kill.
After Eastern pulled off two straight wins by a total of seven points against Western New England, the Golden Bears forced a deciding set with the five-point victory in the fourth set – erasing an early five-point Eastern lead. Leading by three points midway through the fourth set, Eastern was outscored again by a 7-1 count as the Golden Bears oved out to a 19-16 advantage.
On the day, junior Erynn Miller (Stratford) had 17 digs and received 31 serves without an error. Six-foot-two inch senior Katie Wilson (Pittsburg, CA) led the way with 25 kills and 15 digs, four blocks and four service aces. Junior Nicki Gasch (New Fairfield) added 18 kills and sophomore setter Allie Henry (Middletown) 49 assists . Senior Danielle Bourne (Branford) topped the Warriors with 31 digs and handled 41 serves with only one error.
Against Keene, Wilson and Gasch combined for 17 of the team's 27 kills but the Warriors attacked at just .028. Bourn, henry and freshman Allie Luppi (Tewksbury, MA) teamed for 24 digs against the Owls.
Eastern neutralized Western New England's attack with ten blocks but attacked at only .075 and gave away 21 points on reception and service errors. Wilson led all players in the match with 16 kills, Gasch adding ten, with Wilson also serving four aces and blocking three WNEU attacked balls and collecting 11 digs. Bourne amassed a career-high 22 digs against the Golden Bears, Miller matching Wilson with 11 digs.
Eastern visits Connecticut College in a non-conference match Tuesday at the Luce Fieldhouse. AConn (9-1) has beaten Eastern the last two times the clubs have met after the Warriors had taken seven straight in the series.
