Eastern Women's Volleyball Eases to Two Victories in Straight Sets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BROOKLINE, Mass. – A pair of non-conference opponents provided relief for the Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team, which stopped a four-match losing streak with straight set wins over host Newbury College and Bay Path College Saturday afternoon.

Behind the standout all-around play of 6-foot-2 inch senior Katie Wilson (Pittsburg, CA), Eastern (7-9)  was able to utilize all 13 roster players in 25-18, 25-13, 25-19 victories over Newbury (6-11) and in 25-14, 25-14, 25-14 verdicts over Bay Path College (6-5). Both opponents are members of the New England College Conference.

Wilson was no match for either opponent as she had 31 kills and a .587 attack percentage in six sets and also led all Eastern players with 20 digs, three blocks and seven service aces. She was also perfect on a team-high 33 serves. She finished her day's work with a team-high 40.5 points (the sum of kills, service aces and blocks).

Junior Nicki Gasch (New Fairfield) and first-year juior Samantha Browning (Mystic) each collected ten kills on the day, Gasch attacking at .348. Junior Erynn Miller (Stratford) and freshman Allie Luppi (Tewksbury, MA) combined for 25 digs, with Miller adding four service aces. Six different players contributed at least one of the team's 17 service aces.  Sophomore Allie Henry (Middletown) recorded 52 assists.

Sidelined with injury all season, first-year sophomore transfer setter Jess Patrizi (Beacon Falls) made her Eastern debut against Newbury.  In one set, Patrizzi contributed six assists, four digs and a service ace.   Patrizzi averaged team-high averages of 3.53 assists  and 2.53 digs per set last fall at the University of Saint Joseph (CT).

The victory over Newbury kept the Warriors unbeaten in seven matches in this series with the Nighthawks and was the team's first victory on its opponent's court this season. The contest was the first-ever against Bay Path, which was elevated just recently to a four-year institution after being founded as a community college.

Eastern returns to Geissler Gym for its first home match in a month Tuesday when it hosts Western Connecticut State University at 6 p.m.
