This 3-0 Final Score Against Anna Maria Favors Eastern Field Hockey

Box Score

PAXTON, Mass. --  For the second time in two matches this year, the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team played a game which resulted in a 3-0 score.

Only this time, it was on the winning side of the ledger.

Thursday, sophomore forward Deisy Naranjo (Washington Heights, NY) scored the first two goals of her career and first-year sophomore goalie Olivia Mullen (Bethel) recorded her first career shutout against Anna Maria College in the first road match of the year at AMCAT Field.

The victory over Anna Maria (1-2) is the fifth in this series without a loss for Eastern (1-1), fourth by shutout and  follows a 3-0 season-opening loss to Saint Joseph's College (ME) Saturday at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

In contrast to Saturday's loss, Eastern got stronger as this match progressed, outshooting the hosts 11-2 in the second half en route to a 20-6 advantage in that department.  Mullen was called upon for only three saves in the match, thanks to the defense of All-Little East Conference senior sweeper Lauren DeLuca (South Windsor), junior Kelly Gawron (Ramsey, NJ) and first-year sophomore Sam Rossetti (Shelton).

The Warriors did all of their scoring in a 12-minute span around the halftime break. Senior forward Hannah Collier (Watertown) had a hand in all of Eastern's goals, assisting on the first and last and scoring the second for her first goal of the year. Eastern  broke a stalemate with Naranjo's first career goal in the closing minutes of the first half,  and Collier made it 2-0 in the opening minutes of the second. Naranjo put the game away seven minutes into the second half.

Freshman midfielder Laura Chicorka (Enfield) was credited with her first collegiate point when she assisted on Collier's goal.

For the second straight match, the winning team garnered a decisive 16-1 margin in penalty corners. As did the final score this statistic  favored Eastern this time.

Eastern opens Little East Conference play Saturday at 1 p.m. at the University of Southern Maine.
