Eastern Volleyball Splits Four Matches at Trinity

Box Score 1

HARTFORD – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team was involved in two sweeps and two five-set matches over the weekend at the Trinity College Invitational at Ray Oosting Gymnasium, winning two and losing two.

After sweeping Lasell College and dropping a five-set decision to host Trinity College Friday night, Eastern (4-4) lost in three to Wesleyan University (2-0) Saturday morning before bouncing back later in the afternoon to dump Salve Regina University (2-5) in five. Game scores were 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 against Wesleyan and 20-25, 26-24, 25-18, 21-25, 15-12 against Salve. The five-set victory was the first this year for Eastern after two such setbacks.

After edging Wesleyan in five sets a year ago at Geissler Gymnasium,  Eastern attacked at -0.11 Saturday and commited 12 reception errors in three sets to losing its second straight decision in the invitational.

Wesleyan did not take its first lead in the first set until breaking a 13-13 tie. The Cards scored four straight to move out to a 16-13 advantage and the Warriors never go closer than two thereafter. Eastern led by as many as four early in the second set but a five-point run gave Wesleyan its first lead since it scored the first point of the set. Wesleyan got out quickly in the third set but Eastern's 9-1 spurt negated that early Cardinal success. The Warriors held a lead which peaked at 17-12 but Wesleyan outscored the Warriors 13-3 the rest of the way to complete the sweep.

In the decisive fifth set against Salve, senior middle hitter Katie Wilson (Pittsburg, CA) had seven of the team's  ten kills with only one error and combined with freshman Bryanna Kelly (Dunbarton, NH) and juniors Samantha Browning (Mystic) and Nicki Gasch (New Fairfield) for 13 digs. Down by two in Set 5, Eastern scored six of the next seven points. Wilson contributed two kills and a block solo and the Warriors added two points in that run on Salve's attack errors. Eastern attacked at .393 to even the match with the second-set win and  .320 in the final set.

Against Salve, Browning had 19 kills, Wilson 14 and Gasch 12. Wilson also had four blocks against Salve to give her six on the day and handled 19 serve receptions without an error and camem up with 12 digs. Browning contributed 12 digs and three service aces in the win and Gasch 11 digs. Junior libero Erynn Miller (Stratford) had 14 digs against the Seahawks  and sophomore setter Allie Henry (Middletown) had 42 assists and added 12 digs.

On the day, Browning led the way with 26 kills, Wilson following with 22 and Gasch adding 17. Henry finished with 60 assists and Wilson commited only two errors on 35 reception attempts.
