With Tie Against Wesleyan, Eastern Extends Unbeaten Streak to 10

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Mitch Power (Douglas, MA) scored the game-tying goal for the second straight match to help the Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team extend its unbeaten streak to ten with a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Wesleyan University Tuesday afternoon.

At right: Mike Radlbeck

Power took over the team lead with his fifth goal – his third goal in as many matches and fourth goal in the last five – when he beat Wesleyan (5-3-1) junior keeper Emmett McConnell on an assist from senior Carl Stensland (Storrs) with 12 minutes left in regulation. On Saturday, Power's penalty kick early in the second half had lifted Eastern into a 1-1double overtime Little East Conference draw at Massachusetts Boston.

Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead 13 minutes earlier on freshman Charlie Gruner scored his second goal of the season.

The teams played 20 minutes of scoreless sudden death overtime in recording the first tie in this 14-game series.

Eastern (7-1-3) freshman keeper Greg Walton (Brunswick, ME) lowered his goals-against average to 0.56 by playing 65 shutout minutes. Walton, last week's Little East Conference Goalkeeper and Rookie-of-the-Week, blanked Wesleyan over the first 45 minutes, then returned to record four saves in overtime to preserve the tie. Walton has allowed only one goal in his last seven starts and appearances.

Freshman Curtis Barnes (Amherst, MA) was touched for Wesleyan's goal in playing the second half, but came up with five saves when the Cardinals unloaded 14 of their 24 games shots in that second half.

All 17 players in uniform saw action for Eastern, among them senior back Mike Radlbeck (Westbrook). Radlbeck came off the bench to play 45 minutes after missing the last three weeks with injury.

Since dropping an season-opening 3-0 decision, Eastern is unbeaten, having won seven and tied three. The Warriors repeated as New England's No.7-ranked team in the most recent NSCAA ratings, released today.

Eastern visits the University of Southern Maine in a Little East conference match Saturday at 3 p.m.
