Man-Down Does Job as Eastern Men's Lacrosse Wins First Match

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team limited Gordon College to one goal through the first  41 minutes and successfully killed off seven of the Scots' eight extra-man opportunities in the game an 11-4 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Ranked No. 8 in New England, Eastern (1-1) held Gordon (0-3)  to just 21 shots and senior goalie Drew Deane (Vernon) gave up only one goal and made  four saves over 30 minutes to record his first career victory in his first start.

In downing  Gordon for the fifth time in this series in as many matches, Eastern got five goals from  junior midfielder Tyler Fresen (Newington) – giving him eight goals in two matches this year --  and six teammates chipped in one goal apiece.

The Warriors nursed a 1-0 lead  through the first nine minutes of the game before Fresen and freshman midfielder  Ryan Scott (Norwalk) scored 65 seconds apart to make it 3-0. Gordon responded with what proved to be its only goal until just 3:37 remained in the game before Eastern  answered with the next eight – spanning the first three quarters – to over out to an 11-1 lead.

The Warriors were whistled for the first five and eight of the ten penalties in the match but its man-down unit stopped seven of Gordan's man-up tries.

Senior faceoff specialist  won nine of 15 faceoffs and sophomore defenseman Travis Tiger (Ridgefield) caused three of Gordon's 23 turnovers. Scott and sophomore midfielder Dean Accomando (Monroe) both recorded their first career goals and junior defenseman Chris Brown (Cohasset, MA) his first career assist.

Freshman goalie Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, MA) made his first career save in his first appearance over the final 13 minutes.

Sophomore midfielder Sam Spellman (Lewes, DE) scored two of the team's final three goals over the last 3:37 for Gordon, which has opened its season against three regionally-ranked teams.

Eastern visits Babson Tuesday at 4 p.m.
