Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Junior goalkeeper Rachel Skelton (East Lyme) recorded her first career shutout as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team scored eight minutes apart early in the match to down the University of Saint Joseph (CT), 2-0, for the second time in three years in the Warrior Classic in the team's 2013 season-opener Friday evening at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
Saint Joseph inadvertently knocked in the first goal in the seventh minute with a header off an Eastern corner kick, and senior midfielder Kaitlyn Kennedy (Burlington) made it 2-0 eight minutes later when her 12-yarder sailed into an open net. Senior midfielder Tamar Merheb (Bethel) crossed the ball from the right side and senior midfielder Nicole Leonard (Rutherford, NJ)got a touch on it that bounded to Kennedy, who beat Saint Joseph keeper Ashley Hebert.
Saint Joseph had beaten Eastern, 1-0, in last year's Warrior Classic, scoring with ten minutes left in Skelton's collegiate debut.
Skelton made five saves for her second career win in five decisions.
