Eastern Captures Two of Three at Trinity College Invitational

HARTFORD, Conn. --  The Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team moved ahead for good in the early moments of all three sets in sweeping Bridgewater State University Saturday morning at the Trinity College Invitational at Ray Oosting Gymnasium on the Trinity campus. Scores of all three sets were 25-16.

Later Saturday, Eastern (4-6) commited 11 reception errors and attacked at .160 but battled throughout before being and swept by regionally-ranked Trinity College, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16.

With Eastern leading the first set against Bridgewater (4-5) by a point,  sophomore Allie Luppi (Tewksbury, MA) served four straight points and the Warriors were never headed; in the second set, the Warriors outscored the Bears 9-2 to erase an early deficit and move out to a 13-8 advantage; in the final set, Eastern never trailed, scoring four of the first five points – two coming on service aces by Luppi – en route to the sweep.

Freshman Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury) took nearly half of the team's attack attempts, recording 14 kills and digging eight balls in the win. Senior Nicki Gasch (New Fairfield) helped the Warriors to a .298 attack percentage by collecting seven kills with a .400 attack percentage. Senior libero Erynn Miller (Stratford) led the way with 19 digs, with junior Allie Henry (Middletown) picking up ten assists and four service aces, junior Jess Patrizi (Beacons Falls) 17 assists.

Bridgewater attacked at only .029 in the match.

Against Trinity, Mihalek led the team with 14 kills again and added 11 digs, , Miller digging 23 balls, Luppi adding three more service aces and digging seven balls. Patrizi and Henry combined for 28 assists.

 Trinity attacked at .277, led by Hannah Brickley and Kate Giddens, who were a combined 25-for- 60 with only six errors (.317). Brickley also dug 21 balls and the Bantams forced 11 reception errors with four players contributing service aces.

In three tournament matches (2-1 record), Mihalek totaled 44 kills with a .258 attack percentage and had 31 digs; Gasch contributed 24 kills, Henry 40 assists, six service aces, three blocks and 17 digs; Miller 61 digs and five service aces, Patrizi 45 assists and 14 digs and Luppi 18 digs and seven service aces.

Eastern  visits Salve Regina University Tuesday at 6 p.m.
