For Warriors, Two-Goal Lead Dissolves in Loss

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team scored three goals in 14 minutes to erase a two-goal deficit – getting the game-winner with six minutes left – and went on to a 3-2 Little East Conference victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Wednesday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Eastern's Alex Kallgren (Dudley, MA) – the top freshman scorer in the conference – recorded her ninth and ten goals of the season to lift Eastern (6-5, 3-2 Little East) into an early lead, but UMass Dartmouth (6-7, 4-2 Little East)  battled back, tying the match with goals less than nine minutes apart and taking its first led on a goal by sophomore Katelin Morrissey with just under six minutes left.

Kallgren gave Eastern its early lead midway through the second half as the Warriors struck on their only shot of the half. Kallgren made it 2-0 for Eastern two minutes into the second half by

scoring on her own rebound. Sophomore Michaela Carrier got one back for UMass with her first goal of the season three minutes later, and  sophomore Hunter Carden's  second goal of the year  soon after tied the match at 2-all.

With the match heading toward overtime, Morrissey won the ball on the right side of sophomore goalie Samantha Scavo (Redding). A sprawled Scavo made the first save at the right post, but Morrissey controlled the rebound and stuck the winning shot inside the right post.

The win is the ninth straight for UMass over Eastern. The Corsairs had outscored Eastern 30-3 through the first eight wins of the stretch.

Scavo finished with six saves while UMD sophomore Elizabeth St. Germaine needed only three saves on five Eastern shots.
