Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Senior righty Greg Porter (Mystic) stymied Trinity College on three singles through seven innings and the Eastern Connecticut State University defense commited only one error in a 3-1 victory over Trinity College Thursday morning .
At right: Pat Barnett
Porter (2-1) struck out ten – including four straight late in his stint – and senior second baseman Mike Vaccarelli (Wolcott) drove in two runs with a two-out single in the third that helped the Warriors erase Trinity's first-inning lead.
Porter walked two in the bottom of the first and surrendered a two-out single to Bryan Wolfe, but shut out the Bantams the rest of the way as Eastern defeated Trinity for the fifth straight year after losing in the championship game of the 2009 New England Regional Tournament.
Senior righty Pat Barnett (Windsor) faced the minimum six batters over the final two innings to record his first career save. Porter was lifted after allowing two baserunners in the seventh, but got out of the jam with a fly ball to right and called strikeout. Barnett walked the first batter he faced in the eighth but picked off the runner. In the ninth, Wolfe walked to open the inning but was forced at second on base hit to center, and Barnett induced a game-ending double play begun by senior shortstop Brendan Lynch (Wethersfield).
Batting 1-2 in the order junior Joe Perez (North Branford) and senior Nik Ververis (Plainfield) each had two hits, as did sophomore catcher Tim Budd (Cheshire).
Eastern winds up its seven-game Florida trip Friday against William Paterson University at 4:30 p.m.
