NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Eastern Connecticut State University sophomore John Boisette (East Hartford) won the 200 meters and placed fourth in the 100 and three members of the women's team claimed second-place finishes Saturday at the Corsair Classic track & field invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Boisette was not far off program records in both of his events, collecting 15 of the team's 52 points in those events in pacing the men to sixth place in a field of 22. Earning second-place finishes for the women were senior Lauren Hultzman (Putnam) in the high jump, sophomore Emily Kohn (Columbia) in the discus, and freshman Natalie Bowens (Montville) in the triple jump. The women totaled 35 of their 49 points in field events and shared fifth place among 21 competing institutions.
The men's and women's field included seven members from the New England Alliance.
Boisette outran a field of 85 competitors in winning the 200 in a time of 22.35, .61 seconds off the program record. His time of 11.08 in the 100 in a field of 69 was .29 seconds off the record and gave him an individual total of 15 points in two events. Junior Andre Reynolds (Hartford) finished among the leaders in the 110 hurdles and long jump, amassing six points overall. He was fifth in hurdles (15.59) and seventh in the long jump (19-11 ½). Freshman Dan Manzi (Coventry) also added six points in three different individual events. Manzi was sixth in the pole vault (9-8), seventh in the 400 hurdles (1:00.34) and eighth in the 3000 steeplechase (11:16.33).
Hultzman submitted a height of 5-foot-1 in a field of 24 in the high jump, Kohn 115-5 among 44 contestants in the discus and Bowens recorded a mark of 34-10 ½ in a field of 19 in the triple jump. That distance was just 5 ½ inches shy of the program record. Each netted eight points in those events.
Also contributing to the scoring for the men senior Andrew Prince (Orange), junior Luisantonio Rosado (Ponce, PR), and freshmen Tyler Renfro (Middletown), Lawrence McGill (New Haven), Jason Bindner (Milford), and Kevin Jones (East Windsor).Prince was seventh in the 200 (23.09), Rosado fourth in the 400 hurdles (58.03), Renfro eighth in the high jump (5-7), McGill sixth in the 800 (2:02.51), Bindner sixth in the high jump (5-7) and Jones eighth in the high jump (9-2 ¼).
For the men, the 4x400 relay was third and 4x100 relay sixth for a combined total of ten points.
For the women, seniors Akaya McElveen (New Haven), Tacia Bryant (Guilford) and Amy Huhn (Hebron), and freshmen Lauren Polansky (Milford) and Kailynn Violette (Vernon) also scored points. McElveen was third in the 400 (1:00.75), Bryant sixth in the long jump (15-0 ¾), Huhn fifth in the pole vault (9-6- ¼), Polansky fifth in the shot (36-5 ½), and Violette eighth in the 10,000 (50:05.60).
The women's 4x400 relay also netted four points by placing fifth (4:21.29).
Eastern hosts its annual invitational Friday at 2 p.m.
